Are you preparing your picnic basket for Sunday 1899, our annual Victorian picnic?

Here's a summer picnic menu from Mrs. MW Ellsworth's Queen of the Household, published in 1900-

Bill of fare for a summer picnic: Cold Boiled Chicken. Tongue Sandwiches. Spiced Beef. Sardines. Jellied Chicken. Pickled Salmon. Spanish Pickles. Sweet Peach Pickles. Boston Brown Bread. Beans. Fresh Fruits. Imperial Cake. Neapolitan Cake. Small Fancy Cakes.

Just like historical dress is encouraged, but not required, we promise you don't need to eat a jellied chicken to have a good time at Sunday 1899.

Sunday 1899 is June 7, 12-4 PM
Tickets are $20.00 and can be purchased via the link in our bio, on our website, or at the Marble Steps Gate.
Don't forget to sign up for a Tintype photo!

Memorial Day is a sacred day for so many families with relatives and ancestors at North Burial Ground. Preparing NBG’s 110 acres in honor of the brave people who died for our country is an honor, and a team effort. From the Friends of NBG who helped clean stones and place flags in the historic sections, to the St. Augustine KOC who make it their mission to flag our WWI and WWII lot, to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, to the Juneteenth Project, and to the hundreds of family members who came to pick up flags during the week for their loved ones, we want to thank you so much.

NBG’s staff and the teams that come assist from the other Parks Department crews worked incredibly hard this week to make NBG and Locust Grove beautiful places to remember those served.

Thank you, and we hope you have a peaceful and meaningful Memorial Day.

North Burial Ground Master Plan Community Visioning Session
June 1, 5:30-7:30 PM, Roger Williams Park Clark Dalrymple Boathouse, 1000 Elmwood Ave, Providence RI 02907, in Roger Williams Park.
RSVP to [email protected] by Thursday, May 28.

North Burial Ground is developing a Master Plan to guide the cemetery for both short-term improvements, and the long-term development and maintenance of NBG. The Parks Department has retained the services of Towers Golde, LLC. Landscape Architects https://www.towersgolde.com to develop the Master Plan with Parks Department and North Burial Ground leadership.
North Burial Ground is a community asset, and we know that our community members have great vision for NBG. We’d love to hear your dreams (big and small) for North Burial Ground. Towers Golde will provide a short presentation on their phase 1 survey findings, sharing their observations of our space, and then we’ll break into small groups for a visioning activity.

While we’d love to host everyone at NBG, our space isn’t large enough to comfortably host a meeting, so we’ll be gathering at the Roger Williams Park Boathouse. There is parking next to the building.
Tower Golde has identified six priorities (the numbers don’t indicate a ranking) for the NBG Master Plan including:

1. Circulation
2. Landscape/Planting Improvements
3. Cemetery Perimeter Treatment
4. Drainage Issues
5. Randall Park
6. Revenue Generation

When you RSVP for the meeting, please share which priority you’re most excited to discuss!

Every June North Burial Ground goes back in time to a Sunday in 1899 when NBG was the place to go for recreation and relaxation. Join us on June 7th from 12-4 PM.

Celebrate NBG’s Garden Cemetery sections with a day dedicated to the Victorians and their love of cemeteries. Enter the cemetery through our stately marble steps and be transported to another time. Bring your own picnic and enjoy some Victorian-era beverages and candy; have a tintype photo taken in the cemetery by Cole Caswell of AgNO3 Labs; listen to poetry and songs from the period with Cate Clifford; tour NBG’s Victorian monuments; make a Victorian inspired scrapbook page; have your tarot cards read by Dr. Eliza Collins; and enjoy imagining what North Burial Ground might have been like when 1,000 neighbors came to walk the grounds and picnic every single Sunday.

As always, historical attire is encouraged, but not required.

Proceeds from Sunday 1899 support programs and preservation in North Burial Ground. Tickets are 20.00 and you can find the link to purchase in our bio, on our website https://www.providenceri.gov/parks/sunday1899/ or at the door! We'll have the tintype information and sign up available later this week!
