A Voice Upon the Wall

Scripture Text

Ezekiel 33:7 — “So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.”

The Lord hath set a watchman high,Upon the wall beneath the sky;Not there to please the ears of men,But call the wandering back again.He hears the Word from God alone,And speaks the truth before the throne;For if the trumpet give no sound,The careless soul may fall unbound.

O preacher, teacher, saint, arise,And lift the warning to the skies;Let not thy fear make silence sweet,While sinners walk with blinded feet.To warn in love is not in vain,Though men may mock, reject, complain;For God shall judge what men refuse,And count the faithful ones He’ll use.

The watchman’s burden is not fame,But faithfulness unto God’s name.He must not sleep, he must not hide,Nor lay the sword of truth aside.Speak thou the Word, both firm and true,For souls are passing into view;And when the Lord shall reckon all,Blessed is he who kept the wall.
