Crystal King opens a hive with the same care some people open a hymnal. A little smoke first. Then the frames come off. Pollen rides in on the legs of returning foragers. A young, marked queen moves through the dark. And through all of it runs a wonder that will not stay quiet.

In her own words, the bees are “God’s poetry”: orderly and beautiful, a little beyond full understanding. Managing them means knowing their biology well enough to work with them. Standing among them, she says, you cannot help but worship. In a hard season when a loved one was in the hospital and sleep would not come, the colony was the one place she could rest for more than a few minutes. She calls that gift what it was.

It is a portrait of ordinary work as praise—insulation stacked like the crown of a tree, nurse bees keeping brood at a living temperature, colonies maintained and named, honey taken only when it is capped and ripe. Stay with her for awhile. Then notice where creation has already telling you where it all begins.
