There was once a man who went around town slandering the local minister, spreading vicious, toxic rumors to anyone who would listen. He single-handedly poisoned the reputation of the man of God throughout the entire congregation.
Eventually, the weight of his guilt became too heavy to bear. He went to the minister, humbled and remorseful, begging for forgiveness. He swore he would do anything—whatever it took—to make things right and clear his conscience.
The minister looked at him and gave a strange request: "Go home, grab a feather pillow, rip it open, and scatter the feathers into the wind. Then, come back and see me."
The man thought it was a bizarre request, but it was easy enough to do. He went home, cut open the pillow, and watched as the wind caught the feathers, swirling them across the fields and through the streets. Once the pillow was empty, he returned to the mnister and told him the job was done.
"Good," the minister said. "Now, I have one more task for you: go back out and gather every single feather."
The man went pale. "But pastor, that’s impossible! The wind has carried them everywhere. They’re gone."
"Exactly," the minister replied. "And while your repentance is sincere, and your desire to fix the damage is real, remember this: trying to undo the harm caused by your words is just as impossible as gathering those feathers in the wind. Once you speak, the damage is already done."
