Dear Friends,

On July 1st, I returned to the Archdiocese of New York from a beautiful and powerful pallium pilgrimage in Rome. Shortly after my return, I was diagnosed with a detached retina in my left eye and underwent surgery. I am grateful to share that the initial surgery was successful, and I am now in a period of recovery over the next several weeks.

I am truly touched by the care and concern that I know many of you feel, and I am deeply grateful for your kindness and support. During this time of healing, as I may not be able to respond personally, may I suggest that, instead of sending "get well soon" cards, messages, or making calls, you keep me in your prayers. Your prayers mean the world to me, and please know that I am praying for each of you as well.

I will do my best to keep you updated. May our Lord, who brings light to the darkness and grants us the sight to walk in His ways, guide us all in faith and healing. Thank you again for your prayers, and may God bless you always.

St. Henry, German king, head of the Holy Roman Empire, and patron saint of those who cannot have children, pray for us!

Friends, in today’s Gospel (Matt 10:16–23), Jesus predicts the persecution of his followers. A vast army of martyrs have in the course of Christian history given their lives for the sake of Christ and his gospel. They are from every culture, country, language, and background.

This is the army that stands opposed to worldly armies that do their work through violence, threats, and oppression. They witness to the power and authority of the risen Lord and therefore they are fighters—but they do not fight with the weapons of the world.

One might think of St. Peter himself, crucified upside down; or Felicity and Perpetua, thrown to wild animals; or of Thomas Becket, who resisted King Henry II’s attempts to manipulate the Church and was butchered by his henchmen; or Thomas More, who resisted another King Henry and paid for it with his head.

One might think of Paul Miki, the Japanese Jesuit, who was crucified for announcing the Christian faith; or Miguel Pro, who was shot to death for defying a repressive Mexican government, shouting as he was martyred, “Viva Cristo Rey!”

Today marks the beginning of the novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, nine days of prayer to prepare for her feast day on July 16. May Mary be with us, strengthen our faith, and always lead us to Christ.
