From New York Skies to Neighborly Ties: Welcome, Helen!

Our series of introductions continues this week as we share a warm welcome for Helen, who moved to our area from New York last year. When her daughter Doreen and son-in-law Frank relocated, Helen decided to make the move, too. Trusting her real estate agent, she boldly bought her home sight-unseen in the same neighborhood as Doreen and Frank.

When Helen and her family first arrived, they didn't know anyone in the neighborhood and hadn't yet found a church home. However, God has a wonderful way of aligning our paths. At the neighborhood pool during water aerobics, Helen met Lois Lucas, who invited her and Doreen to BUNCO Beauties. And that was the beginning of their journey to membership!

It was during one of those early water aerobics classes, however, that Helen felt a sudden, sharp pain in her lower stomach. While she isn't normally one for doctor visits, the discomfort was severe enough that she decided to get it checked out. What followed demonstrates God's amazing providence.

The doctors discovered that the exercise in the pool had caused an existing hernia to drop. While dealing with a hernia is tough enough, the medical evaluation led to the early discovery of liver cancer. Following a successful, highly targeted Y90 treatment in December and a subsequent hernia repair this past April, Helen is happy to report that the main tumor is gone. Though she is still navigating some physical recovery hurdles—and notes that she "still doesn't have any energy!"—she looks back on that water aerobics class as a true blessing from God

Throughout a life filled with many seasons of change and trial, Helen has always kept her faith, regularly attending church wherever she lived. At Risen Savior, she has found a comfortable spiritual home. When health or energy keeps her from attending in person, she watches the services online, and she is deeply grateful for Pastor dropping by to visit and give her communion.

When she isn't fighting cancer, Helen is a lifelong crafter - even before she retired from home-health care. She has even taught classes, like creating custom hats, and transforming placemats into decorative butterflies. She is currently checking out the local Senior Citizens Center, hoping to jump into some of their craft classes.

Faith, Family, and High-Flying Adventures: Welcome, Jen! Our New Member Spotlight series continues this week with an introduction to Jennifer Rose, who brings a background of hard work, family devotion, and a lifelong Lutheran heritage to our community. Jen works as a supervisor for Southwest Airlines, a role where she regularly interacts with colleagues and travelers. She is currently on medical leave due to a workplace injury that highlights her dedication as a team player. Hearing that the baggage ramp was short-handed one morning, she stepped in to help load a time-critical early flight and unfortunately tore her rotator cuff. An initial surgery did not fully resolve the injury, so she had a second surgery last week to repair a remaining tear. We pray that this recovery is going smoothly and comfortably. Originally from Denver, Colorado, Jen recently relocated to Georgia. Her parents and her two adult sons, ages 26 and 24, still live in the Denver area, while her 22-year-old daughter lives about four hours away here in Georgia. It is an especially joyful season for the family; her daughter, who was married a year ago, just shared the news this past week that Jen is going to be a grandmother in the coming months. Alongside her family, Jen has another constant companion – her 11-pound Schnauzer-Poodle mix. Lucy originally joined Jen when she began living on her own, and over the past ten years, has been right by her side. Thanks to her airline benefits, Lucy has accompanied Jen on so many trips that she has accumulated more travel miles than most people. Outside of work, Jen is an avid reader and listener of true crime books and podcasts. She also enjoys traveling and learning about new destinations from her passengers. Jen is often included by her sons on their “friends” trips, with everyone paying their own way. Her favorite of these adventures so far was to the Amalfi Coast in Italy – which featured some of the most scenic yet nerve-wracking driving she has ever experienced. Their next destination together is Hawaii, while Dubai and Jordan remain high on her personal travel list. She also enjoys gardening, though her current home limits her to a large collection of potted plants. Jen’s faith journey is deeply rooted in her family history. Her grandparents, who were Missouri Synod Lutherans from Sioux City, Iowa, played an important role in shaping her faith and encouraging her along her journey. Jen was baptized in the same church where her grandparents were married, and she grew up valuing the church as the central place for life’s significant milestones. Since joining us, Jen has attended the Foundations Bible study and found the experience highly engaging. She is looking forward to attending more studies and exploring different biblical topics in the future. She is interested in volunteering with our youth programs and within our school, as she has a great love for children. She is hoping to get involved with Sunday School, childcare, or volunteering within the classrooms for third grade and up. Please take a moment to welcome Jen to our church family when you see her, and please keep her in your continued prayers for healing during her post-surgery recovery.
