Native American Urban Ministry in Phoenix

This Ministry is created to meet the needs of the urban Native American in Phoenix It is a ministry of the ELCA and sponsored by the Grand Canyon Synod

There are over 100,000 Native Americans in Phoenix. This ministry is for a new generation of people who want to honor their culture and be Christian or those who worship in the traditional way. The Creator of our understanding honors all people.

Labor Day Talking Circle with lots of activity. There is something comforting about walking into a room to the drumming and singing. Peoples faces light up, some start singing as they are coming in the door. Tonight's refreshments were Yogurt, Bananas, oranges and Grapes. Of course we offer chips and cookies to go with the coffee. Some people come in and head straight for the food, others go the clothing pantry. Still others stand around visiting with one another. Then the sharing from the heart fills the room with the Holy Spirit. A shout out to Derrick for the singing and drumming and Tamara for leading the Circle. God is good. All of the time, God is good.

YES We are having Talking Circle on Monday, Sept 7th-Labor Day Holiday! Please join us. Doors open at 5pm, clothing room will be open and snacks will be served. We start right at 6pm. Parking is validated inside and is free, enter from the West Parking Lot.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Our Talking Circle tonight will have a special prayer to all those we have lost or have been affected by overdose. Please join us. 💜💜💜💜

Every Monday night I get to be a fly in the wall to hear some of the greatest healing words I've ever heard. And they don't come from medicine men, or doctors, they come from the person who has ever struggled with pain, trauma, substance abuse, grief and loss and is still standing.

I am blessed to be able to make coffee and put out snacks and water to serve these amazing people. They have taught me so much about my own trauma, my own grief and my own healing journey. They inspire me to be a better me and they probably don't even realize it.

Here's a few wise words that stuck with me tonight:

"This is what our ancestors wanted for us. This is how they survived, all together and with each other."

"Thank you for showing up for yourself."

"Thank you all for being here for me every week.You keep me sober"

We're building a community of healing every Monday night. We pray for the ones who haven't found us yet, that they are safe until they make their way home to us.

Tonight is Talking Circle at 6pm to 8pm! Join us! The clothing room will be open at 5pm. Circle starts at 6pm and ends at 8pm. Parking is free and refreshments are served! Park and enter from the West Lot at Grace Lutheran Church.

What a wonderful worship service. We were blessed with guests from Epiphany of The Lord Lutheran church in Apache Junction. Janice and Robert Cunningham blessed us with a delicious lunch of sloppy joes, chips and cookies. Soul work was the topic of the day. How do you take care of your soul? Pastor Mary Louise talk about the shadow work we must do to make room for the light. Those negative things that weigh us down have to be released and sent back to the Universe. There is no room in our psyche for them. Spiritual evolution is always working for us. Sometimes we are unaware.
The ever popular clothing pantry was open to the delight of many. Yes, today we fed God's children in Spirit and Body. All credit to the Holy Spirit.

We have worship tomorrow! Saturday, August 22nd.
We offer a safe space to be yourself and worship how you feel you need to. All our welcome! Parking is free, coffee hour at 10a, clothing closet is open and lunch is served after the service. We hope you join us!

Today we hosted our first of three speakers in a series focusing on Christ, Culture and Community.
We were blessed to have Prairie Rose Seminole lead a conversation that explored how can we be Indigenous and Christian?
It's a complicated topic and she only had about an hour, but her insight and experience are invaluable.
Our event opened with a song by Talking Circle leader Tamara Yazzie. We had a great lunch after and people were invited to share their experiences & struggles growing up as both Native and Christian.
We're looking forward to our next Speaker event on October 17th!
