🇺🇸⚒️ He witnessed the end of the Civil War, helped support his family through skilled craftsmanship, managed canneries across the Midwest, and eventually made his way to Phoenix.

Today, George L. Godfrey rests in an unmarked grave at Rosedale Cemetery, his exact burial location lost to time. Yet his story—from the siege of Petersburg to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and finally to Arizona—remains an important part of our community’s history.

🐠✨ Did you know?✨🐠

We posted this fascinating object a week ago and it is......an 1800s aquarium with fountain! 🌊⛲

Yes, people in the mid-1800s kept elaborate aquariums complete with decorative fountains long before modern fish tanks became common. Victorian families were fascinated by nature, exotic sea life, and parlor displays that combined science, beauty, and entertainment. 🐚🐟

It most likely appeared in Phoenix in the more middle class to affluent homes🕯️🏡

Thank you so much for everyone who joined us yesterday for Memorial Day! Picacho Peak Camp 1 (SUVCW) did a beautiful flag raising ceremony honoring all of our fallen soldiers. Merry Gordon gave a fantastic and truly educational book talk on her book “Arizona’s Murdered Madams”. And, our ever popular Steve Schumacher, the Phoenix Mayor’s Office Official Historian, visited us and honored the grave of CJ Dyer.

Thank you to those who serve and we honor those who have fallen!

❤💙💙❤♥From Civil War battlefields to the dusty streets of early Phoenix… the story of Horace B. Fitch is one of resilience, reinvention, and sacrifice.

A Union veteran who served during the siege of Vicksburg, Horace later became a grocer in territorial Phoenix after surviving illness, hardship, and personal loss. Though his original grave marker has vanished from Masons Cemetery with time, his memory lives on through a memorial brick at Pioneer & Military Memorial Park. 🕊️

Who was the quiet Civil War veteran behind one of early Phoenix’s forgotten stories? Come visit him and others who served this weekend at the PMMP!⚔️🌵

⚖️ From Civil War corporal to one of frontier Phoenix’s trusted officials... ⚖️

Charles H. Knapp helped shape early justice in Arizona’s growing capital. 📜🌵

A Union veteran, respected District Court clerk, and prominent member of the GAR and Knights Templar, Knapp’s life was marked by service—but also deep personal tragedy, losing both his young daughter and first wife before his own untimely death at just 53.

Buried in the Masons Cemetery beside his family, Knapp’s story is one of duty, devotion, and the hardships of early Phoenix.
