Friends General Conference extends its gratitude to Marvin Barnes, who has served for the past six years as Presiding Clerk of FGC. Marvin's calm demeanor has been welcome in challenging times. At the close of our October Board Meeting, Marvin's final term as Presiding Clerk will come to an end.

FGC has come so far as an organization under Marvin's leadership. Thank you, Marvin, for all you have done in service to FGC Friends!

Good news! Last week, the federal appeals court ruled for a "preliminary injunction to be reconsidered" on Mennonite et al vs. Homeland Security. In other words, the federal appeals court supported the ongoing work of the case, which argues that the threat of ICE agents would interfere with essential ministries and services of faith communities. It does not bar ICE agents from houses of worship, but it allows the case to continue.

FGC's General Secretary, Barry Crossno, said: "Today’s decision is an important step towards protecting our ability to act according to our religious conscience, to honor the stranger, without government interference. As Jesus said, 'I was a stranger and you invited me in.'

October 24-30 is Disarmament Week. In the 1990s, the Quaker United Nations Office helped its stakeholders work together to create the Mine Ban Treaty. This treaty, also known as the Ottawa Treaty, prohibits the stockpiling and production of mines. 162 countries signed the treaty, but the United States is not among them.

In 2025, several countries withdrew from the treaty. These countries include Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland, all countries that have been impacted by the War in Ukraine.

We recommend reading this article in the Chicago Tribune, which outlines how a rise in hate is affecting Indian Americans.

For those of us who warned that unchecked anti-Indian and anti-Hindu rhetoric would turn deadly, one of our worst nightmares nearly came true.

FGC's Ministry on Racism Program coordinates a weekly worship time for white Friends/Friends of European descent who are confronting racism. In the past, one question they focused on was: "Do you know in your heart that there is more than one way to a desired outcome?"

Together, Friends anchor in worship sharing, which is a Quaker practice that combines silence with individual sharing. Each week has a slightly different focus. If you'd like to attend, register below.
