"In Whose Image?" (Pastor Tim Emmett-Rardin)

"For 'In God we live and move and have our being'; ..." - Acts 17:28a

EXCERPT: Believing, knowing, remembering that we and each and every other are created in the image of God guards against idolatry, guards against love that is out of balance, guards against the temptation to create God in our own image. Again from Paul: “Since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the divine is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the craft and creativity of people.”

We are made in God’s image, not the other way around. Which means that we are temples in which God is found, and through which God is made known; in and through which Love is found and made known.

Remember that Paul, in his letter to the Corinthian church, also wrote, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Cor. 6:19)

Friends, we belong to God, and so we belong to each other—as those lovingly created in the very image of the God who is Love itself. Never forget!

Faithfulness to that divine truth, embracing and internalizing the truth that we are all made as reflections of divine Love makes love not only possible, but more likely. Love of God. And love of neighbor, as with love of ourselves. All in life-giving balance.
