"One Way?"
1 Peter 2:2-10 / John 14:1-7
Pastor Tim Emmett-Rardin
EXCERPT: “Rabbi, we do not know where you are going. How would we be able to know the way?" How can we know the way?
You already know the way, Jesus insists, because you know me. And if you know me, you know God.
Thomas is pleading for a map, for details, for certainty, but Jesus reminds them that they don’t need a map. The journey of faith, the journey of life, is always uncertain, but you know me! You know who I am and so you know who God is—and because God is Love, the only WAY to God IS love. ...
Why, in a tradition that seeks to follow Jesus, are we so hell-bent on trying to EXCLUDE rather than EXPAND?! God, who is Love itself, demands ever expansive and inclusive, not ever restrictive, conditional, love. ... To suggest that Jesus is the only way to God, the only way to salvation, fundamentally flies in the face of who God is. Or at least who we believe God is. If we believe that God is Love itself, and if we believe that God’s love is UNconditional, why in God’s name would and do we in the Christian Church then condition that love on belief in Jesus? ...
Jesus, though unique and exceptional in many ways, isn’t the ONLY way to God, to abundant life, because the ONLY way is Love. And let’s be clear: Jesus, Christianity, the Christian Church, DOES NOT have a corner on the love market.
God does. NO ONE comes to the Creator, no one comes to the house with endless rooms, no one comes to salvation, no one comes to truth, no one comes to life, EXCEPT by and through love. Period.
