Most Holy Name of Mary

Today’s Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary originated in the late 17th century. Saint John Paul II restored the feast in 2002. We venerate Our Lady under a litany of holy titles and patronages. Twelve of these titles are represented in beautiful white marble statues here in Perryville, Missouri, within the Marian Meditation Circle on the campus of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.

St. John Gabriel Perboyre, C.M., was a Vincentian missionary priest who served in China in the 19th century. He died a martyr's death for refusing to renounce his faith in Christ. Tomorrow: 25th Anniversary of 9/11

AMM joins fellow Americans in prayerful remembrance of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We echo the prayer for peace given to the world by Saint John Paul II:

“Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace, who are Yourself our peace and reconciliation ... Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love. Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples on the earth become as brothers and sisters. May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. Amen.”

National Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities

Ten years ago, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called for a National Day of Prayer to be observed on September 9, the Memorial of St. Peter Claver, as a response to increased racial tensions. This initiative is intended to foster honest and respectful dialogue and to promote reconciliation within communities facing heightened tensions. Reflecting on this day, Bishop Joseph Perry said: “We Christians believe that prayer accomplishes wonderful things for our families and communities. Prayer is the miracle salve for the ills of individuals as well as communities. The Lord Jesus promises that our prayer is heard by God. Let us never give up on prayer as a means to bring us closer to God and to one another.” Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for – and with -- us!

Open Your Heart to Our Lady of Sorrows — This coming Tuesday, the Church observes the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. I can’t think of a more fitting feast day to turn to Mary with the sorrows we experience. If you haven’t already done so, I invite you to share your needs and the needs of those you love for remembrance in prayer during our September 15 Mass at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
