#27 – Immaculate Conception Catholic Church – St. Mary, MO ✨
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Mary has deep roots along the Mississippi River bluff. In 1853, St. Mary’s Seminary of Perryville purchased six acres for $100, choosing what was considered the most desirable site overlooking the river.
From 1854 to 1871, Vincentian priests from the Seminary cared for the mission, which served the surrounding communities of Ozora, Lithium, and St. Mary. A small frame church was built in 1855, and in 1861, Reverend Abraham Ryan—Vincentian priest and poet—preached a mission here.
As the community grew, so did the parish. By 1871, membership had reached 175 parishioners, and the need for a larger church became clear. The cornerstone of the current structure was laid in 1887, standing faithfully as the spiritual heart of St. Mary until 2018.
