Christmas Country Church Tour

Christmas Country Church Tour If you’re looking for the reason for the season, a trip to Southeast Missouri may well be the answer to your prayers.

In its 19th holiday season the Christmas Country Church tour is an open house event of inspirational locations. If you're looking for the reason for the season, a trip to southeast Missouri may well be the answer to your prayers. The self-guided free tour, which only features churches that are at least a hundred years old, is not meant to be completed in one day or even over the full weekend. Each church will be decorated for Christmas and have greeters, Christmas music and refreshments.

✨ #36 – Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church – Sereno, MO ✨

⛪ Founded in 1904, Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church began as a response to local parishioners who found travel to the Lithium parish difficult. Their determination built the foundation of the Sereno faith community.

The first Mass was celebrated on June 6, 1908, by Rev. Patrick Lyons in a vacant store. He vowed to return—if a chapel was built. Inspired by this promise, the community got to work, and by 1909, even though it was only partially finished, the new church hosted its first Sunday Mass.

Growth and devotion continued through the decades. In 1994, the parish received permission to construct a new church, which was joyfully dedicated in 1997. 🙏

Step inside this beautiful parish during the 20th Anniversary Christmas Country Church Tour and experience the history, faith, and community that define Sereno.

#27 – Immaculate Conception Catholic Church – St. Mary, MO ✨

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Mary has deep roots along the Mississippi River bluff. In 1853, St. Mary’s Seminary of Perryville purchased six acres for $100, choosing what was considered the most desirable site overlooking the river.

From 1854 to 1871, Vincentian priests from the Seminary cared for the mission, which served the surrounding communities of Ozora, Lithium, and St. Mary. A small frame church was built in 1855, and in 1861, Reverend Abraham Ryan—Vincentian priest and poet—preached a mission here.

As the community grew, so did the parish. By 1871, membership had reached 175 parishioners, and the need for a larger church became clear. The cornerstone of the current structure was laid in 1887, standing faithfully as the spiritual heart of St. Mary until 2018.

✨ #18 – Lithium Baptist Church – Lithium, MO ✨

Originally surveyed in 1822, the community of Lithium was once envisioned as a health resort, believed to be enriched by the healing properties of its spring water. 💧
The town was officially incorporated in 1883, and just two years later—in 1885—Lithium Baptist Church was built on land generously donated by C.F. Laurence, preserving a beautiful piece of this historic community’s story.

#9 Apple Creek Presbyterian Church – Pocahontas, MO
Apple Creek Presbyterian Church is a remarkable piece of frontier history. ⛪️✨ Established in 1821, it turned 200 years old in 2021 and stands as the third oldest Presbyterian church west of the Mississippi River.

In the early days of settlement, the church was a welcome haven for pioneers seeking a fresh start—where land was affordable for those willing to brave the challenges of building a life on the new frontier. 🌾🛤️

Today, Apple Creek Presbyterian remains a proud symbol of resilience, community, and enduring faith—making it a truly special stop on the Christmas Country Church Tour. ❤️
