Here’s something I’d love for our FCC family to think about this week: Who lives closest to you?

Not who goes to church with you.
Not who you work with.

Who actually lives near you?
Do you know their names?
Do you know anything about their lives?
Would they feel comfortable asking you for help?

Jesus told us: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” — Mark 12:31

Sometimes we think about loving our neighbor as this enormous mission....but maybe it starts much closer to home.

Walk across the yard.
Introduce yourself.
Take over some cookies.
Stop and talk instead of waving from the car.
Ask how they’re doing.
And when the opportunity comes, pray with them.

God has placed people all around us. FCC, let’s make sure the people closest to us experience the love of Jesus through us.
Connect. Grow. Serve.

You Won't Want to Miss This Message!!

Who are you really working for?

Your boss?
Your family?
Your customers?
Your paycheck?
Your reputation?

This Sunday, we’re going to look at a better answer.

Scripture says: “It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Colossians 3:24

That one truth has the power to change the way we approach Monday morning.

It changes how we work when nobody is watching.
It changes how we handle frustrating people.
It changes how we serve when the task feels small.
It changes how we think about retirement, responsibility, and even the ordinary things that fill our day.

This Sunday’s message is called Labor Day Lessons, and we’re going to talk about what it looks like to work with purpose, serve with the right heart, and make our daily lives an offering to God.

There is a difference between asking God questions and questioning God.

Ananias asked questions when God told him to go to Saul.
That was understandable.
But he still obeyed.

Job asked questions too. So did others throughout Scripture.

God is not threatened by honest questions.

But there is a line between:

“Lord, help me understand.” and
“Lord, I do not trust what You are doing.”
That is where we need to be careful.

Isaiah 45:9 says: “Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker…”

We are human. God knows that.

We hurt.
We cry.
We get confused.

Jesus Himself expressed anguish in Gethsemane and on the cross.

But anguish is not the same as arrogance.
Pain is not the same as demanding that God answer to us.

Sometimes faith sounds like this: “God, I do not understand. I have questions. I am hurting. But I still trust You.”

That is very different from deciding God must be wrong because His will does not make sense to us.

Ask the questions.
Bring Him the pain.
But do not lose sight of who is God.

A room full of people who have everything figured out.

We’re people raising families, navigating changes, celebrating good things, carrying difficult things, making mistakes, growing, and learning to follow Jesus through all of it.

And every Sunday, we come together around the One who holds it all together.
Jesus.

Come Join Us This Sunday for Labor Day Lessons!

Our job is not the only work that matters to God.

Some people punch a clock.
Some are raising children.
Some are retired.
Some are caring for aging parents.
Some are serving quietly behind the scenes.
Some are simply trying to be faithful with whatever is in front of them today.

This Sunday at First Christian Church of Perry, we’re talking about Labor Day Lessons and what it means to see our work through God’s eyes.

Colossians 3:23 says:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”

Whatever you do.

That means your work can have purpose even when nobody notices.
Your service can matter even when nobody applauds.
Your daily responsibilities can become part of your worship.

Join us this Sunday as we talk about work, purpose, attitude, diligence, and what it looks like to serve Christ in the ordinary parts of life.

A lot of our complaints reveal what we think life owes us.

Job lost his family, his possessions, his health, almost everything.

Jonah lost a plant.

Both complained.

But those complaints were not coming from the same place.

Sometimes we complain because we are genuinely hurting.
Other times we complain because life did not go the way we thought it should.

Philippians 2:14-15 says: “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure…”

That does not mean Christians never hurt.
It does not mean we pretend pain is not real.

It means we need to examine the heart behind the complaint.

Am I grieving?
Or am I acting as though God owes me a comfortable life?

Am I bringing my pain to God?
Or am I accusing God because His will is not my will?

Job and Jonah both struggled.

But Job eventually came to a place of acceptance and repentance.
Jonah kept resisting.

And maybe that is the real question for us: When God speaks, will I let Him change my heart?

When we finally realize this life is not about us, and we are okay with that, something changes.

We can say with Job: “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him.”
Job 13:15, NIV84

That is not easy faith. That is surrendered faith.

Sometimes we make following Jesus more complicated than it needs to be.

We wonder what God wants us to do next.
We worry about decisions that haven’t happened yet.
We try to figure out where we’ll be six months from now.

Meanwhile, God has already given us plenty to be faithful with today.

Love the people in front of you.
Forgive when you’ve been hurt.
Tell the truth.
Keep your word.
Spend time with God.
Serve someone who needs you.
Do the next thing you already know God wants you to do.

Jesus said: “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” — John 14:15

Sometimes spiritual growth isn’t about discovering something new.
Sometimes it’s simply doing what God has already shown us.

What order does worship come in for you?

That was one of the biggest contrasts between Job and Jonah.

When Job’s life collapsed, his first response was worship.

Job 1:20-21 says: “At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship…”

Job hurt.
Job grieved.
Job eventually complained.
Job questioned.

But worship came first.

Jonah was different.

He questioned.
He complained.
He got angry.

And only later did worship enter the picture.

Because when life takes a turn, our first response reveals a lot about what is going on in our heart.

Do we begin with: “God, why are You doing this?”

Or: “God, I do not understand this, but You are still God.”

Worship does not mean pretending everything is okay.

It means remembering who God is before our emotions start telling us who He is.

He is still God.
He is still on the throne.
He is still worthy to be praised.

So when the next hard thing comes, ask yourself:
What order will worship come in for me?

What if the way you work is actually part of the way you worship?

This Sunday at First Christian Church of Perry, we’re talking about Labor Day Lessons and what Scripture says about the work God has placed in front of us.

Whether you’re working a full-time job, raising a family, retired, serving at church, caring for someone, building a business, going to school, or simply trying to be faithful with the responsibilities of everyday life, this message is for you.

Colossians 3:23–24 says: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men… It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Our work is not just about a paycheck.
It is not just about recognition.
It is not just about keeping people happy.

Whatever we do can become an act of worship when we do it for the Lord.

We’ll laugh a little, look honestly at our attitudes, and talk about how God can give purpose to the ordinary work right in front of us.
