For veterans facing homelessness or struggling to regain stability, knowing where to turn can make all the difference.

This week, Jen and Mike speak with Susan Stevens, regional program coordinator for Catholic Charities of South Jersey’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), along with Catholic Charities Executive Director Dr. Maria Elena Hallion and diocesan Director of Development Stacy Napolitano.

Susan explains how SSVF helps veterans and their families secure or maintain housing while connecting them with the benefits, employment resources and community support they have earned through their service. From rental and utility assistance to help navigating the VA system, finding work and addressing the practical barriers that can keep a family from becoming self-sufficient, the program walks alongside veterans with dignity and compassion.

The conversation also looks ahead to the Catholic Charities Annual Dinner, which raises funds to assist veterans and other clients with needs that grant-funded programs cannot cover. This year, Catholic Charities will present its Saint John Neumann Award to Bishop Joseph L. Coffey, an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. A retired Navy chaplain, Bishop Coffey served for 28 years and continues to provide pastoral care and sacramental support to veterans across the nation.

Veterans and families in need of assistance can learn more about Supportive Services for Veteran Families or call 856-340-9242.

Fall is shaping up to be a busy season across the Diocese of Camden — and Mike Walsh and Jen Mauro are here to help you plan ahead.

On this week’s Talking Catholic, Mike and Jen preview some of the diocesan events coming between now and November, including gatherings for young adults, opportunities to explore the permanent diaconate and prison ministry, the Blue Mass, the Diocesan Hispanic Celebration, the New Jersey March for Life and the Diocesan Marian Pilgrimage to Washington, D.C.

They’re also putting out the call for some new voices on Talking Catholic. Along the way, Mike and Jen discuss podcast auditions, Mike’s resistance to becoming a deacon, Jen’s questionable pilgrimage footwear and why no one should ever expect Mike to schedule another Teams meeting.

For generations, the Di Paolo family has believed that good food does more than satisfy an appetite... it brings people together.

This week, Talking Catholic hosts Kari Janisse and Jen Mauro visit DiPaolo's Restaurant and Bar in Penns Grove to share a meal with family owners Michael Di Paolo and his sons, Michael and Anthony. They trace the restaurant’s journey from the small pizzeria and grocery store opened by Albert and Maria Di Paolo to a beloved South Jersey destination known for traditional Abruzzese Italian cuisine, generous portions and treating every guest like family.

The Di Paolos reflect on recipes learned by watching their parents and grandparents, the faith and hard work that sustained the family business, and the Sunday dinners that taught them the importance of slowing down and gathering around the table. They also share the unforgettable story of two complete strangers who once appeared at the family’s door — and, without anyone knowing who they were, were welcomed inside and served dinner.

Along the way, Kari and Jen sample Di Paolo’s famous complimentary antipasto, chicken parmesan, homemade pasta, jumbo-lump crab cakes, mushroom risotto, and limoncello while discovering that the restaurant’s most important ingredient has always been hospitality.

It’s a delicious conversation about food, faith, family and the sacred connections formed when there is always room for one more at the table.
