The 55-acre cemetery boasts the only tree-canopied street in the city. A mausoleum was constructed in 1918, with additions in 1920 and 1964. In 1889, Stephen Olney purchased from the United States government, land which had been a part of the Umatilla Indian Reservation on the southwest border of Pendleton. When the Pioneer Cemetery became unfit for further use as a cemetery, the City Council purc

hased of Stephen Olney 155 & 56/100 acres of his land and named it Olney Cemetery. At the time of the purchase of the land, the City Council set aside a lot to be used for the burial of Stephen Olney when it should be needed. Olney died some years later in Sprague, Washington, and is buried there. The first person to be buried in the Olney Cemetery was James H. Turner, a former lawyer, teacher and editor of the East Oregonian, on June 13, 1891. Figg suddenly dropped dead and he was buried the next day-the second funeral in the new cemetery. Figg left a fund for the purchase of lots int he Cemetery for the use of the Masonic Order of Pendleton.

Reminder that all grave decorations from Memorial Day must be picked up by end of business on Friday, May 30th. Any remaining decorations will be removed by staff for mowing on Monday, June 2.

As a place of rest, reflection, and remembrance, our cemetery is a sacred space that deserves quiet respect from all who visit. We kindly ask everyone to please observe the following guidelines:

🚫 No Dogs Allowed
Out of respect for the families visiting loved ones and to maintain the cleanliness and dignity of the grounds, dogs are not permitted in the cemetery (with the exception of registered service animals).

πŸ™ Please Be Respectful

Keep voices low and refrain from disruptive behavior.

Do not walk on graves or memorials.

Help us keep the grounds clean by disposing of trash properly.

Let’s all do our part to preserve the peace and reverence this space was created for. Thank you for understanding and honoring the memory of those who rest here.
