In the month of Av, when the jewish community observes the destruction of the temple, the beams of the burned temple are uncovered.

Archaeologists excavating the City of David in Jerusalem have uncovered charred wooden beams from a building destroyed in the Babylonian conquest of 586 BCE - and the tree rings preserved inside them may allow researchers to date the destruction of ancient Jerusalem with greater precision than ever before. Until now, archaeologists could only date such finds within a range of hundreds of years. The unusually large number of growth rings in these beams could narrow that window to as little as a decade.

Researchers believe the ruins were deliberately left in place when Jerusalem was later rebuilt - a deliberate act of memory, preserving the moment of destruction for future generations. The discovery was announced just days before Tisha B'Av, the Jewish fast day marking the destruction of the First and Second Temples. The soil of Jerusalem never stops telling its story.
