“a good thing”
[From A Previous Note]

Psalm 92:1 “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:”

The Psalmist declares that it is “a good thing to give thanks” “and to sing praises”. Not just in general, but “unto the LORD” and “unto thy name, O most High”. Our “LORD” is not generic and is not impressed with “moments of silence” or the vain noise that is passed off for music in our “modern” day. He is “the LORD” our “most High” God. As Paul told the philosophers on Mars Hill, “in him we live, and move, and have our being; … we are also his offspring” (Acts 17:28). Peter told his persecutors, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). So Great and Magnificent is “the LORD” our God that Solomon proclaimed, “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13); thus, He is “the LORD, who is worthy to be praised” (Psalms 18:3)! Let us make time in our lives to come together to sing praises to His Holy Name and to give Him thanks for the manifold blessings that He so graciously and mercifully showers upon us! Therefore, let us spend much time doing this “good thing”!

“a new song”
[From A Previous Note]

Psalm 144:9 “I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.”

After praying in verses five through eight, David jubilantly declares “I will sing a new song unto thee, O God”. In his song David praised “God” “that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword” (Psalms 144:10); that is, that “giveth” him victory over his enemies. In his song, he prays that “God” would “deliver me from the hand of strange children” (Psalms 144:11); that is, those ungodly and immoral enemies who sought to destroy and dominate Israel. He asks for this deliverance so that their children might prosper (Psalm 144:12), so that they would have abundant supplies of necessary things (Psalm 144:13), and that the people would enjoy happy times (Psalm 144:14). He concludes his song with the blessed truth of everlasting comfort, “happy is that people, whose God is the LORD” (Psalm 144:15). On all levels of life, true happiness comes only when “God” is our “LORD”; that is, He is our first love, our principal reason to live, the center of our lives, our Strength, our Comfort, our hope, and the very essence of our Faith. Our enemies persistently pursue us to draw us into ungodliness, to distract us from our “LORD”, and to entice us with the vain gods of this present evil world. On personal, social, and even national levels we must never forget that “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” (Psalm 9:17); that is, the “hell” of ruin and misery in this present life. Let us vigilantly look unto our “LORD” for our deliverance and diligently worship and serve Him, trusting that He will deliver us from our enemies and prosper us with life’s necessary things and happiness in His service!

“Bow thy heavens”
[From A Previous Note]

Psalm 144:5 “Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.”

After a vivid description of man in his depraved nature; in verses five through eight, David prays for deliverance from wicked men. He prays that the “LORD” would “Bow thy heavens”; that is, show forth His glorious power for all to see. He prays for the “LORD” to “come down” and “touch the mountains, and they shall smoke” in the wake of His sovereign power. He prays that the “LORD” would send forth “lightning” as “arrows” to “scatter” and “destroy” his enemy and “deliver” him “from the hand of strange children”. His enemies are said to be “strange children” because their thoughts and ways are “strange” (greatly different) to the Commandments of God; they are ungodly, immoral, and cruel. His enemies “speaketh vanity”; that is, they promote a life motivated by vain carnal desires. His enemies hold “falsehood” in “their right hand”; that is, when they would appear to be friendly, they are discretely seeking to overwhelm and destroy. Such are the enemies of Christianity today; they are found both in our Country and abroad. Let us follow David’s example and pray that the “LORD” will again in our day “Bow thy heavens” with His glory and “rid” us of our enemies so that we may live and worship in peace.

“what is man”
[From A Previous Note]

Psalm 144:3 “LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him! 4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.”

After declaring the strength and goodness of the “LORD” in verses one and two, David turns to view man in contrast to the “LORD”. So great is the contrast between man and the “LORD”, that David was amazed that the “LORD” would even take “knowledge of him”; that is, even acknowledge that he existed. When the “LORD” looked down upon man, what did He see: “The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.” what He saw was that “They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Psalm 14:2-3). Isaiah declared: “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” (Isaiah 64:6). Paul writes, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23). The “LORD”, in His abundant grace and pity, “remembereth that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14); that is, we are weak in the flesh and prone to sin. Using “Judah and Jerusalem” (Malachi 3:4) as a type of all the “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God” (I Peter 1:2), the “LORD”, in spite of man’s depraved nature, declares Himself faithful to His chosen people: “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6). When the Children of God view themselves in contrast to the absolute goodness and righteousness of the “LORD”; we cry, “Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:5). We, like David, are amazed that the “LORD” would take “knowledge” of us. In our amazement, we rejoice to declare that our relationship with the “LORD” and our eternal salvation is entirely “by grace”! When we come to understand this fundamental truth, we gratefully recite with Paul, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8). And, we joyfully sing with John Newton, “Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me”! Our “LORD” is infinitely worthy of our dedicated worship and obedient service in this life!

“Blessed be the LORD my strength”
[From A Previous Note]

Psalm 144:1 “Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: 2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.”

As King David reflected upon his past blessings, he declared “Blessed be the LORD my strength”! In Psalm 28:7, He wrote, “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.”. Similarly, Paul wrote, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13). It is clear that both of these men of God trusted in the Lord’s “strength” and did not rely upon their own. The same “LORD” “strengtheneth” us today and daily “comforteth us in all our tribulation” (II Corinthians 1:4). Life is fraught with battles and struggles and heartbreaks. Some are physical, while some rage within us; but, wherever and whatever the battles are; the “LORD” remains our “strength” our comfort and our help. Isaiah records a most precious promise from the “LORD”: “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” (Isaiah 65:24). When we cry unto our “LORD”, He hears and He answers, and He “strengtheneth” us so that we are well equipped to face the battles of this life and continue to faithfully serve Him.
