Commitment to Christ

Following Jesus Without Looking Back

Key Scripture:

Luke 9:23 (KJV) – “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Introduction

Many people want the blessings of Christ, but true discipleship requires commitment. Following Jesus is not just a Sunday experience—it is a daily decision to surrender our lives, obey His Word, and remain faithful regardless of circumstances.

Supporting Scriptures

* Matthew 6:33 – Seek first the kingdom of God.

* Romans 12:1-2 – Present your bodies as a living sacrifice.

* John 15:4-5 – Abide in Christ.

* Philippians 3:13-14 – Press toward the mark.

* Hebrews 12:1-2 – Run with endurance, looking unto Jesus.

Four Marks of Commitment to Christ

1. Commitment Requires Surrender

We cannot follow Christ while holding on to our old way of life.

Scripture: Romans 12:1

Discussion Questions:

* What areas of my life have I not fully surrendered to God?

* What does being a living sacrifice look like today?

2. Commitment Requires Obedience

Love for Christ is demonstrated through obedience.

Scripture: John 14:15 – “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

Discussion Questions:

* Is my obedience based on love or obligation?

* What has God asked me to do that I have delayed?

3. Commitment Requires Perseverance

Trials do not mean God has left us. They are opportunities to strengthen our faith.

Scripture: James 1:2-4

Discussion Questions:

* How have difficult seasons strengthened my relationship with Christ?

* What helps me remain faithful during hardship?

4. Commitment Produces Spiritual Growth

A committed believer becomes more like Christ over time.

Scripture: John 15:5

Discussion Questions:

* What spiritual fruit is growing in my life?

* What habits help me stay connected to Christ?

Practical Ways to Stay Committed

1. Spend time with God daily through prayer and Bible reading.

2. Worship faithfully with other believers.

3. Serve others with love and humility.

4. Share your faith with those around you.

5. Remain faithful even when life is difficult.

Reflection

Ask yourself:

* Is Christ first in every area of my life?

* What competes with my commitment to Him?

* What changes do I need to make this week to grow closer to Christ?

Memory Verse

Joshua 24:15 (KJV)

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to follow You. Forgive us for the times we have allowed distractions, fear, or comfort to weaken our commitment. Help us to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and faithfully follow Jesus. Strengthen us through Your Holy Spirit to obey Your Word, trust You in every circumstance, and remain steadfast until the end. May our lives bring glory to You and point others to Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Kids really did enjoy VBS this year. The focus was not on the decorations, but on Jesus being the light, the learning of scripture, the praying for one another being excited about who Jesus is in their life have definitely been a blessing.
