Join us tomorrow during our 9:30 a.m. worship service in honoring our commitment, expressed through membership in the Open and Affirming Coalition UCC/More Light Presbyterians, to affirm that we are ALL created in the image of God and worthy of inclusion in the work of love to which we are called. We will have a guest speaker, Mikah Meyer, who will show a short film he produced during the worship service.
About Canyon Chorus:
Set against the backdrop of Desolation Canyon, UT, Mikah Meyer, a world-record traveler and LGBTQ+ advocate, reflects with three close friends and his mentor, Larry Edwards, on their stories and the power of mentorship within the q***r community. As a child, Mikah believed he could never have a successful life AND be publicly out and gay. When he moved to college and met Larry, his openly gay choir professor, a lifelong mentorship was born. Amidst conversations and joy along the river, we understand the power and importance of their friendship. As Larry enters what he calls the ‘final chapter’ of his life, he reflects on the lifelong fight for openness and vulnerability within the q***r community, and through the desolation of nature, finds contentment in a job well done.
About Mikah Meyer:
National Parks Expert, Mikah Meyer, has been described as a “Professional Road Tripper” by REI, but he’s much more than that: A classically trained singer, award-winning filmmaker, and frequent speaker everywhere from Amazon.com’s headquarters to National Park Foundation galas.
Raised as a Lutheran preacher’s kid in the flat state of Nebraska (Larry Meyer, UofNebraska Lincoln 1989-2005), Mikah is passionate about exploring all types of outdoor locations, and helping people of divergent backgrounds find joy and common ground through their shared love of nature.
This advocacy is seen through his short film Canyon Chorus, and via his diverse adventures, including runs across the states of Minnesota, Mississippi, and Nebraska, and a 3-year, world record setting road trip to all of America’s 400+ National Park Service sites.
His next short film Miss Adventure chronicles one of these runs, and his following, feature length film Wild Goose Chase covers the expedition to every national park across the USA.
Mikah is the creator of the Outside Safe Space symbol, which is sold at park gift shops and recreation stores including REI nationwide, and is currently being worn by over 100,000 people in the United States as a non-verbal signifier of LGBTQ+ allyship in outdoor, rural, and active spaces.
He has been featured by The Today Show, NPR, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Guardian, and National Geographic Traveler.
