Now get up, go down, and go with them without hesitation, for I have sent them.” Acts 10:17-23

The story of Peter and Cornelius is similar to Philip and the Ethiopian. Peter was trying to understand a very odd dream that he just had and the Spirit tells him to get up and go meet Cornelius, like, NOW. As we experienced last week, the Holy Spirit can move in powerful and creative ways. Sometimes it takes all that power to smack us upside the head and shake us out of our doubts, our apprehension to point to a different narrative. A narrative that points to new abundant life. Pay attention this week to how the Holy Spirit might be nudging or even shaking you up so much that you cannot stay quiet.

May 24 is also “Aldersgate Day,” which recalls and celebrates John Wesley encountering the Holy Spirit in what he described as his heart being “strangely warmed.” It was truly a conversion experience for him as he was studying Romans 8 with his small group. When have you experienced the pouring out of the Holy Spirit or a “heart-warming” encounter?

What could you do in the week ahead to explore what it means to be unbounded by the Holy Spirit?

Spirit of the Living God, we sometimes place boundaries on how we understand or experience you. In this time of celebrating the gift of Pentecost, may we be open to how you want to pour out your Spirit on our lives. Give us ears to hear your voice and the conviction to be truth-tellers. Transform us with your love to all around us. Amen.

This Sunday we wear red for Pentecost! Pentecost Sunday celebrates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all believers, empowering the church for mission and proclaiming that God’s Spirit is unbound and available to all. The unbounded Spirit is here among us, always working for the flourishing of God’s creation and always inviting us to participate. Will we join in?

Last night Harmony hosted MICA Project’s strategy meeting to make our neighborhoods safe and welcoming for everyone. By the end of meeting, concrete plans were made for locations in the city, county and St. Charles. Exciting to see how the Spirit of justice moves amongst the people. Want to shape positive change in your neighborhood? Contact MICA Project to see how you can get plugged in.

There is no longer Jew or Greek; there is no longer slave or free; there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28

When Paul writes of these two extremes, he is writing to contain both ends of the spectrum. In doing so, we also tend to form binaries that it can also be either or. Room isn’t made to consider the in-between: people who are neither Jews nor Greeks, people who are paid at a severely minimal wage, or q***r people. People who lack clear definition to us are probably the harder to include because we can’t easily identify them to put them in our mental box. Do you have anyone in your life who is not easily identifiable? Our brains like order and these people are not following the order that makes sense to you. To its full effect, Paul is including everyone who is not you. They too are children of God through faith. Perhaps lean into the undefinable and maybe in our search for inclusion, we may find out more about ourselves.

What do we do with our questions? Last week we left Philip and the Ethiopian on a desert road. It wasn’t clear what would happen next. That feeling is familiar to each of us: None of us are ever sure what will happen next. This week we will explore the conversations we can have when we are honest about our questions.

Yesterday Harmony and United Women in Faith supported the student art show at the Julie Hahn Center by offering locally made conchas, buñuelos and agua frescas. The task was to find inspiration from an object in their lives and create something from it. A wonderful way to live into the creative nature of God!

And you, Jesus, are you not also a mother?
Are you not the mother who, like a hen,
gathers her chickens under her wings?
Truly, Lord, you are a mother;
for both they who are in labour
and they who are brought forth
are accepted by you.
You have died more than they, that they may labour to bear.
It is by your death that they have been born,
for if you had not been in labour,
you could not have borne death;
and if you had not died, you would not have brought forth.
For, longing to bear sons into life,
you tasted of death,
and by dying you begot them.
You did this in your own self,
your servants, by your commands and help.
You as the author, they as the ministers.
So you, Lord God, are the great mother.
