John Wesley’s second General Rule, “Do good,” calls us not just to kindness but to sustained, transformative action. In the face of injustice, poverty, and spiritual need, we are invited to be agents of God’s grace, offering both practical help and spiritual guidance. This is a lifestyle of faith lived out in action, reflecting the love of Christ in all we do. Let us commit to doing good in our daily lives, not just through acts of charity but by advocating for justice and nurturing the souls and bodies of those around us. In doing so, we live into the legacy of Wesley and the early Methodists, who saw every opportunity to serve as a chance to bring God’s kingdom closer.

As United Methodists, we are heirs to a rich tradition that calls us not only to personal piety but also to social holiness. Wesley’s rule to “do no harm” is not just a guideline for individual behavior but a radical call to challenge structures that cause harm. In today’s world, living into this rule means asking hard questions about how we participate in harmful systems and committing ourselves to justice, peace, and
the flourishing of all people. Let us commit to daily reflection on how our words, actions, and choices impact others—and be willing to take bold action to dismantle systems of harm.

Do no harm. Do good. Attend to the Ordinances of God. In the earliest days of the Methodist movement, John Wesley laid out three simple yet profound rules that became an ethical blueprint for faithful action in the world. In our new sermon series beginning this Sunday, we will explore these enduring principles and discover how they guide us to live out our faith with intention and integrity.

In a world that often feels divided and contentious, what would it look like to follow the simple rule of “do no harm”? This week, we’ll examine the impact of our words and actions, learning how to bring peace and kindness into our relationships and communities.

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1

One of the main benefits of technology is that it does the hard work so we don’t have to and therefore gives us more time to do non-work. And our bosses, our companies, even our own selves betray this blessing of free time and fill this gift to our lives and beings with…more work. AI gives us this grace yet again with freeing up our work schedule. So fight the temptation of filling it with work and take up this simple rule: If technology gives us more time, give some of that time back to people.

Did AI summarize a document for you? Call a friend you haven’t talked to in a while.
Did AI help you figure out where to plant those fall mums in your yard? Go bring in your neighbor’s trash cans.

Ultimately by grace you have been given this gift of free time in your space of work. Using AI to clear your schedule can be the opportunity to create more of heaven on earth with the real human beings God places in your life.
