“Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy.” Exodus 20:8
There is currently a growing Shabbat controversy surrounding Café Basimta, a Messianic Jewish café in the heart of Jerusalem. Protesters from the nearby Ultra-Orthodox community have repeatedly gathered outside the café over its decision to remain open on Shabbat, while secular Israelis have staged counter-protests in support.

Sabbath is so sacred, it is seen as an identifier of God’s people. And then Jesus comes and shakes things up by doing work-related things on the Sabbath.

Where is our respect for people who don’t rest? Where is our respect for people who do? Perhaps the real learning is like any parable: it is in the part where the most discomfort lies. If you find Sabbath on Sunday, how are you honoring God and fully participating that way? If you find Sabbath on another day and time, how are you devoting yourself to that? Take the time of rest to fully live into what God’s rest has in store for you.

This weekend, America honors the working community with a day of rest. We may work hard, but do we rest well? Our bodies may be protesting because our minds have justified just one more thing to do. While the disciples work overtime, Jesus gives them time off to rest, release, heal and pour into themselves before facing thousands. This Sunday, experience the kind of rest from work Jesus wants you to enjoy.

Travelers, when we read or listen to the story from the Book of Luke about Mary and Elizabeth’s family reunion, we might want to take some time and imagine what it must have been like for them to know that God was with them and was working in their lives to do something amazing.
When you think about this story like this, does it seem like knowing God is with you when you are joyful would have been easy or not so easy back then?
How does knowing this story encourage us to know that God is with us when we’re joyful today?

Our Mile Marker for this session is “God is with us when we’re joyful!” As we think about the story of Mary and Elizabeth’s Family Reunion, we can see that God was definitely with Mary and Elizabeth in their time of joyfulness and that God was the source of their joy.
What are some ways God is a source of joy for me?
What are some ways I can join God and share my joy with others?
with God, we will experience joy and that we can share that joy with others.

Mary “set out and went with haste” on a journey to see her cousin Elizabeth after she received word from the angel that she would be the mother of God’s son. As Mary made it to her destination, joy abounded on the outside and inside. God gives us hope and joy in the form of people along the way to encourage us and bless us.

As we work together toward a safe and welcoming community for immigrants, Ritenour Stronger Together and Migrant and Immigrant Community Action Project believe that our efforts require dismantling the intertwined systems of immigration enforcement and mass incarceration, join us in this fight!

We'll discuss the current fight to end police cooperation with ICE and 287(g) agreements in your community, whether those agreements already exist, are pending, are a potential threat, or local police are currently cooperating with ICE without any agreements in the pipeline. This isn’t just about your immigrant neighbors, immigration is a testing ground for how civil rights will be comprehensively undermined for all of us.

Travelers, when we read or listen to the story from the Book of Exodus about the Israelites taking the scenic route, we might want to take some time and imagine what it must have been like to follow a column of cloud every day and a column of lightning every night.

When you think about this story like this, does it seem like trusting God to be with you when you go off course would have been easy or not so easy back then?
How does knowing this story encourage us to know God is with us when we go off course today?

Our Mile Marker for this week is “God is with us when we go off course.” As we think about the story of the Israelites taking the scenic route, we can see that God showed up for the Israelite people every day and every night.
What are some ways God shows up for me?
What are some ways I can join God and show up for others?
With God, we can show up for others in wonderful ways!
