Psalm 119 invites a posture of humility, teachability, and openness; Romans 13 urges spiritual wakefulness and names courageous love as the ethic by which the church’s future should be shaped; and Matthew 18 presents honest conversation, accountability, reconciliation, and shared life as essential practices of Christian community. Darren Morgan’s message, “Identity Rooted in God,” is based on Isaiah 51:1-6 and Matthew 16:13-20. The theme of the readings is identity – God’s identity, our identity, and the community’s identity – and how that identity becomes the ground for courage, hope, and faithful action. Beginning with Chioma Oforji’s experience of being told she did not belong, the message connects personal and communal questions of belonging to the church’s present season of discernment and change. Isaiah’s call to “look to the rock” reminds God’s people that their identity is rooted in God’s covenant love, while Peter’s confession at Caesarea Philippi shows that the church is built on God’s revelation of Christ rather than human certainty or perfection. The congregation is encouraged to face the future from a place of trust, remembering that it already possesses compassion, faithfulness, mission, and a foundation in Christ, and to continue welcoming, serving, praying, listening, and risking love as a community whose identity is rooted in God…

08/09/2026: Sunday worship at The Federated Church of Orleans on the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost – see link below. The message by Rev. Darren Morgan is titled “The God Who Meets Us,” based on 1 Kings 19:9-18 and Matthew 14:22-33. Margaret Chase Smith displayed quiet courage during the McCarthy era in her “Declaration of Conscious,” which is a good segue into the biblical stories of Elijah at Horeb and Peter walking on the water. God often meets people not through spectacle or overwhelming displays of power (wind, earthquake, fire), but in moments of fear, exhaustion, vulnerability, and uncertainty – with a whisper for Elijah and an outstretched hand for Peter. This is reassurance to individuals – and congregations – that vulnerability is not a barrier to God but often the place where God’s presence, healing, and renewed calling begin. Even when communities feel tired, smaller, or unsure of the future, God remains steady and faithful, calling them forward through quiet, relational ministries of welcome, encouragement, prayer, kindness, and presence. The central promise is that the God who finds us in the cave and reaches us in the storm is the same God who leads us into tomorrow with grace, courage, and faithfulness…
