Good morning Crossroads family! Today is Thursday September 10, 2026 and here is Day 4 of this week's 5-Day Devotional from Sunday's message "What is The Gospel?"

This five-day devotional is an invitation to move from simply knowing about the gospel to personally receiving it and standing on it. As we revisit Scripture from the sermon, we’ll face our need honestly, God’s love confidently, and Jesus’ finished work humbly. Each day builds toward a clearer, steadier life centered on grace through faith in Christ alone.

Day 4

Ephesians 2:4-9

The gospel does more than inspire better behavior, it brings dead hearts to life. Ephesians says we were dead in sin, but God, rich in mercy and great in love, made us alive with Christ. That is not a remodel; it is resurrection. When the gospel is received, God doesn’t merely help you become a slightly improved version of yourself. He begins making you new.

Paul also removes every attempt to turn salvation into a paycheck: by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is the gift of God, not the result of works. “Jesus + nothing” protects both humility and assurance. You cannot boast in a gift, but you also don’t have to panic about maintaining what you didn’t earn! Your hope rests on God’s grace, not your record.

Reflection Questions:

In what ways have you treated Christianity as self-improvement rather than new birth and new life in Christ?

Where do you feel pressure to prove yourself to God, and what would it look like to rest in grace instead?

How would your prayers change if you approached God as someone made alive by mercy, not someone trying to earn acceptance?

What is one step of faith you can take today that expresses dependence on grace rather than confidence in your own effort?

Life Application:

Identify one “Jesus + something” you tend to add (performance, knowledge, serving, reputation). Consider how it distorts the gospel. Apply the truth of scripture over it, and ask God to help you to see and turn away from anything you may be adding to the miracle of His grace!

We’re excited to welcome Donnell Berry as Crossroads Church’s new Director of Operations!

Donnell and his wife, Michelle, have called Crossroads home for more than 15 years. Along with their children, Gabriella and Camden, they’ve been an active part of our church family, with Donnell serving in Kids Church, Church Camp, and other areas over the years.

Donnell brings more than 15 years of leadership experience at Verizon, where he has led teams, developed leaders, managed large initiatives, and helped create healthy, thriving cultures. He has also spent the past 15 years coaching youth sports in our community, investing in young people and teaching the value of teamwork, discipline, perseverance, accountability, and character.

At the heart of Donnell’s leadership is a desire to serve people, strengthen relationships, develop leaders, and leave things better than he found them. We’re grateful for the many ways he and his family have already invested in Crossroads and our community—and we’re excited for all that’s ahead as he steps into this new role.

Day 3

John 3:16-17

If sin explains why we need the gospel, love explains why God gave it. John 3:16-17 reveals the heart of God: He loved the world and gave His Son so that whoever believes would have life, not condemnation. The gospel is not God waiting for you to get your act together; it is God moving toward sinners with a saving gift.

Many people assume God’s primary posture toward them is disappointment, but the cross tells the truth: God’s motive is love, and His aim is rescue. This does not make sin small, it makes grace stunning. Receiving the gospel means letting God define you not by your worst moment, but by Jesus’ finished work given to you through faith.

Reflection Questions:

When you think about God looking at you, do you instinctively feel condemnation or invitation? What shapes that instinct?

What does it mean to you personally that God “gave” His Son, and how does that confront both shame and pride?

Where are you trying to earn love (from God or others) rather than receive it as a gift?

What is one practical way you can reflect God’s saving love to someone this week (a conversation, apology, generosity, or presence)?

Life Application:

Name one fear that keeps you distant from God, and respond to it using the truth of John 3:16-17.

MARI Ministries, a ministry our church is grateful to support, has launched a new Biblical Marriage Retreat for couples seeking time to reconnect, pray, and align their marriage more closely with God’s design.

Unlike MARI’s marriage intensives, this retreat isn’t focused on resolving a particular issue. It offers couples dedicated time away from everyday distractions to invest in their relationship, grow in spiritual intimacy, and reflect Christ’s love for the Church (Ephesians 5:32).

Day 2

Romans 3:23

The gospel becomes precious when we stop managing our image and start telling the truth about our condition. Romans 3:23 levels the ground for everyone: "all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory." That means your greatest need is not a self-improvement plan, it’s rescue, forgiveness, and new life that you cannot produce on your own.

One of the easiest ways to miss Jesus is to minimize sin by comparison: “I’m not perfect, but I’m not as bad as them.” The sermon challenged that mindset directly. Heritage, morality, and religious culture cannot remove guilt or heal a broken heart. The first step in receiving the gospel is agreeing with God about your need and refusing the illusion that you can be your own solution.

Reflection Questions:

Where do you most often compare yourself to others in order to feel spiritually “okay”?

What is one area of sin or brokenness you tend to excuse, hide, or rename?

How has “trying to be a good person” shaped your view of God? Do you relate to Him more like a judge to impress, or a Father to trust?

What would humble, honest repentance look like in one relationship or habit this week?

Life Application:

Write a simple confession to God: name your need for mercy and your inability to fix yourself apart from Christ.
