KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Council 367 Knights of Columbus Norfolk Council 367
"The First Council in the South"
Established 1898 Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J.

McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and a

ssistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.

The First Council in the South is sorry to report that Sir Knight Charlie Prietz, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, December 16th.

Charlie was our Treasurer for years and helped with many projects the Council was doing, especially when it came to cooking the food. He also played the saxophone with the Basilica of St Mary’s band for Saturday night Vigil Masses.

Charlie was best known for his Charlie Sandwiches and Charlie Tators during our monthly breakfasts in the past.

After we were set up for breakfast, Charlie would make all the helpers a Charlie sandwich consisting of toast, bacon, over-easy egg, tomato, cheese, and mayonnaise. It was delicious. His hashbrown potatoes with vegetables were legendary as all raved about them as the best tators they ever eaten. He said it was his secret ingredient that made them extra tasty.

Charlie was born August 15th, which was the Holy Day for the Assumption of Mary. Every time the rosary was prayed on a Wednesday meeting, Charlie led the 4th decade of the Glorious Mysteries which was the Assumption of Mary.

No details yet on funeral arrangements.

We’re going to miss you Charlie and your awesome sandwiches, tators, and especially your friendship.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Vivat Jesus!
