Have you read your Bible today?

If you have been following the Bible in a Year program that Fr Tomy challenged us all to start at the beginning of Lent, today was day 183, which means that we are over halfway done!

If you haven't started or fell out of the routine, it's never too late to jump back in!

Today we celebrate the Assumption of Mother Mary, Queen of Heaven, an important celebration in our liturgical calendar.

Is the Assumption biblical?
Yes. In John's apocalyptic visions contained in the Book of Revelation, he sees only two persons. Jesus, "...one like the Son of Man..." (Rev 1:13) and Mary..."She gave birth to a son, a male child destined to rule all of the nations with an iron rod, and her Son was taken up to God..." (Rev12:5).

John also describes seeing the Ark of the (Old) Covenant. "Then God's temple in heaven was opened and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple." (Rev 11:19) If the Ark of the Old Covenant is revealed in his revelation, there's no reason why Mary, as the ark of the New Covenant, would not be as well.

Have others been bodily assumed into Heaven?
Yes. According to scripture, Enoch (the great-grandfather of Noah) and Elijah were both assumed into Heaven. (Gen 5:24 & II Kings 2:11)

Why is Mary considered the Queen of Heaven if she is Jesus' mother?
In the Davidic Kingdom (King David's kingdom), the queen was not the wife of the king, but the mother. Revelation 12:1 describes a woman clothed with the sun and a crown of twelve stars on her head. It is because of this crown and her being the mother of Christ, the Catholic Church identifies her as the Queen of Heaven.
