Prayer and fasting week at Cornerstone….
What does that mean? We all know what prayer is. It’s every Believer’s personal communication with the Lord. Sadly, prayer happens most when we’re in a jam; that’s when we full-heartedly call out to Him the most. Now is a time that we can humble ourselves, deny ourselves, and listen to what God has to say. That may mean purposely shutting down any outside interference so that we can hear more clearly. It provides opportunity for us to re-center our attention on Him, making prayer a constant connection and priority in which we invite Him to recalculate and redirect us, if necessary. When that’s established, we can then begin to seek God with a pure heart, interceding and making our requests known to Him.
What should I fast? In scripture, fasting is a spiritual discipline involving abstaining from food for a certain period of time, just to focus on God. Some people do a complete fast, others do partial fasts, often excluding their favorite and most cherished foods and/or desserts. Some have conditions that don’t allow for these options, so they fast [abstain] from other things, i.e. entertainment, social media, favorite hobbies, personal comfort, etc. Fasting SOMETHING you love helps you to remember that you’re “on task”, and committed to seriously pray and seek God.
What should I pray for? There are MANY things that NEED prayer! After assuring that your own heart issues have been addressed, you may want to consider devising a plan…. Nail down a certain block of time each day, just to pray [no excuses]. Make a list of things to pray about, maybe include journaling. What are your own personal desires and concerns? How about your family? Don’t forget your home church and other churches, for blessing and success in winning the lost. Pray for revival in Newark, NY and beyond. Pray for Iran, Israel, and the entire middle east, for the thousands of Christians being killed in Nigeria, for the Ukraine and Russia conflict, and terrorists and rioting in the USA. Don’t forget about our government [local, state, federal], and the midterm elections. Pray for the huge segment of evangelical Christians who don’t sense a need to vote, to JUST DO IT!
James 5:13-16 13 Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. 14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. 16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
