Recovery is about more than getting sober. It’s about learning to trust God with your future.

In this part of his story, James reflects on a pivotal moment in treatment. After beginning to experience real healing and surrendering his life to God, he faced a new fear: what would happen when he left the safety of the program?

His counselor challenged him with a simple question:

"What makes you think your relationship with God won't be stronger when you leave here?"

For many people in recovery, the battle isn't just against addiction. It's against the constant expectation that things will fall apart.

Hope begins when we stop assuming the worst and start trusting the One who is leading us forward.

Every circumstance in our lives is a gift we can offer back to the Lord for Him to use as a means to help turn hearts toward Jesus. It seems this is what Paul is saying in this passage. Though troubles came, he endured, trusting that the Lord would one day redeem the pain and also work through the circumstances in a way that brought good to him and his partners in ministry that loved Jesus.

Have you ever wondered, “Can I really trust God when life is hard?”

Faith doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means trusting the God who holds every answer — even in seasons of fear, grief, uncertainty, and pain.

Hebrews 11 reminds us that ordinary people trusted an extraordinary God through impossible circumstances… and He proved faithful.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1

No matter what you’re facing today, God is still sovereign. He is still working. And your story of faith may encourage someone else more than you realize.

This woman still bears fruit in old age. She is ever growing, ever green. Her purpose in life is to declare to anyone who enters her life: My God is good. He is my rock. His love and sovereignty is perfect. This is where we start when struggling to know how to live out this second life.

I AM your peace.

For to us a child is born, us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Relapse rarely begins with the substance itself.

In this clip, James explains that relapse often starts long before someone picks up a drug or a drink again. It begins in the heart, in isolation, in spiritual weakness, and in the small compromises that go unnoticed.

That’s why churches and leaders need more than awareness. They need biblical understanding, practical wisdom, and the ability to recognize the warning signs before someone spirals deeper into addiction.

Because addiction is no longer affecting “someone else.” It’s impacting families everywhere.

The Help & Hope Conference exists to help equip churches and leaders to respond to addiction with truth, compassion, and Gospel-centered care.

God wants to break apart our jars of clay to display the treasure of the gospel. That process showcases His power and not our weaknesses. Breaking hurts and sometimes destroys, but rather than despair, this should give us great hope if our hearts are fixed on the bigger picture of eternity. The breaking through humility puts Jesus on display, rather than our pride and hurt feelings.
