Happy Labor Day! While many enjoy a well-deserved long weekend with family and friends, mariners are out on the water, keeping our country moving.

Through long hitches away from home and tough conditions on deck, these dedicated crews ensure our supply chains remain strong and maritime commerce flows uninterrupted. Their hard work and skill often go unseen, but their impact is felt every single day.

On this day in 1939, the UK and France began a naval blockade following the Allied nations' declaration of war on Germany. German U-boats began targeting Allied shipping. On September 8, the Winkleigh was torpedoed and sunk. Her crew escaped by lifeboat and became the first survivors of a German U-boat attack to arrive at SCI for care and support.

It’s almost sweater season, and with it, colder weather. SCI will be ready, thanks to the generosity of our 1,000 plus fiber artists across the country and beyond. 🧶

Sharon R. from Pennsylvania is one of those amazing volunteers. This year, she generously contributed four beautiful hat and scarf sets for Christmas at Sea. 🎄

As we think about the colder days ahead, we’re grateful for volunteers like Sharon who help bring warmth and a little bit of home to mariners spending the holidays on the water. 💦

SCI Chaplain the Rev. Nancy Simpson recently visited The Galveston Seafarers Center, connecting with fellow maritime ministry partners who share our commitment to serving mariners and seafarers.

Relationships across the maritime ministry community strengthen our collective ability to provide care, connection, and support to those who work on the water. By fostering these partnerships and learning from one another, we continue building a stronger network of care for mariners and seafarers wherever their work takes them.

We are grateful for the Galveston Seafarers Center’s hospitality and for the opportunity to connect around our shared mission of serving those who keep our maritime industry moving.

Together, these generous volunteers contributed enough ditty bags 🧵 to provide one for an entire crew aboard a container vessel—with 12 to spare! The average container ship has a crew of about 24 people, which is pretty remarkable when you consider the enormous size of these vessels. 🚢

Last week, SCI welcomed three emerging maritime and ministry professionals to our International Seafarers’ Center for time with our chaplains and firsthand exposure to SCI’s mission: Tulane Law student Jackson Fox, who is concentrating in maritime law; General Theological Seminary seminarian Mike Bagley; and SUNY Maritime College graduate student Molei Zhang.

Through conversations with our chaplains and ship visits in the Port of New York and New Jersey, they gained an intimate look at the experiences of seafarers and the importance of connection and care within the maritime community.

SCI is always glad to welcome visitors who want to learn more about our work and the lives of the people we serve. By creating opportunities for firsthand connection, we hope to cultivate a shared understanding across the maritime industry of the people at its heart—and inspire continued care, advocacy, and support for seafarers and mariners.

A century ago, The Lookout featured the world's first Flettner rotor ship, the Baden-Baden (formerly Buckau), following its arrival in New York Harbor after a nine-day crossing from Danzig in May.

Rather than relying on traditional sails, rotor ships use tall, spinning cylinders to harness the Magnus effect, generating thrust from the wind. While the technology was ahead of its time, it has experienced a resurgence in recent years as the maritime industry explores wind-assisted propulsion to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

SCI was honored to take part in the 118th Commemoration of the Prison Ship Martyrs in Brooklyn on August 22, joining a longstanding tradition of remembrance during the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence.

The Rev. Dr. Bill Allport, SCI Chaplain based in the Port of New York and New Jersey, offered the invocation and memorial commendation, honoring the thousands who lost their lives aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War.

Held in Wallabout Bay, prisoners of war, dissidents, and suspected spies endured deplorable conditions with little food and virtually no sanitation. The remains of approximately 11,500 prisoners are interred beneath the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park.

For 118 years, the Society of Old Brooklynites has gathered to preserve the memory and sacrifice of these Revolutionary War martyrs.
