On this day in 1792, Captain George Vancouver claimed Puget Sound for England, despite the longstanding presence of Indigenous communities speaking Lushootseed, Twana, Chimakum, and Klallam languages.

This lantern slide captures Seattle’s waterfront circa 1914, likely photographed from Smith Tower looking north toward Magnolia, Interbay, and Queen Anne. Pike Place Market can be spotted just beyond the line of piers on Elliott Bay.

During the SUNY Maritime College Summer Sea Term, SCI Chaplains build relationships with cadets in many ways—through worship services, office hours, and one-on-one conversations—but also by joining them in activities that create connection and community. During a Ship Library-hosted painting session in the mess hall, SCI Chaplain the Rev. Dr. Bill Allport pulled up a chair and got creative alongside the cadets.

Sometimes the most meaningful ministry happens in moments like these: sharing a table, working on a project together, and building trust one conversation at a time.

It's a perfect day for baseball—and the workers of Port Newark know it. This morning, a group of ILA members stopped by the International Seafarers' Center for an impromptu game of catch under the sun.

Amid the towering cranes, constant movement, and demanding pace of port life, moments like these offer a welcome pause. Whether they're seafarers far from home or port workers keeping cargo moving, the men and women who pass through the ISC can find a place to recharge, connect, and enjoy a bit of recreation before getting back to work.

At the IMX 2026 Awards Ceremony, SCI proudly joined in honoring the legacy of Joseph M. Tyson of Canal Barge Company as the 2026 Mike Rushing Legacy Service Award was presented posthumously in recognition of his extraordinary leadership and lasting contributions to the inland maritime industry.

As part of the tribute, a donation was presented to the Seamen’s Church Institute in Joe’s honor. Pictured are SCI President and Executive Director, the Rev. Mark Nestlehutt, receiving the donation alongside Tava S. Foret Foret, President & Co-Founder of the TVIB - Towing Vessel Inspection Bureau and SCI Trustee, and Todd Rushing.

We are deeply grateful for this meaningful gift, and for the enduring impact Joe’s life and service continue to have on the maritime community.

May 28, 1588: The Spanish Armada began its departure from Lisbon. An “invincible” fleet, it would meet defeat at the hands of Elizabeth I’s navy.

A 1955 Lookout photo highlights a karaka-type merchant vessel, like those that once sailed from Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik), then a major Mediterranean seaport. Five ships of this kind were part of the Armada. The model in SCI’s collection was a gift from the Yugoslav government.
