Since 2022, Girls Play Trumpets Too has been empowering young women across the Greater New Orleans area through the power of music. Their students learn to play the trumpet while building leadership and poise through performance and expanding their world views through travel.

Over the past four years, Girls Play Trumpets Too has advanced the personal and professional development of over 300 young women with their cultural exchange program, school partnerships, and community initiatives.

Twenty-one years after Hurricane Katrina, the 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish are still being rebuilt. Beyond brick and mortar, the real work of recovery, advancing health, safety, and opportunity, is being led by nonprofits doing the hard work these communities need to flourish.

Established at the storm's 20th anniversary, the BCM K20 Grant invested $410,000 in 10 nonprofits rooted in two of the areas most impacted by Katrina. K20: Fortified Not Forgotten is Baptist Community Ministries' commitment to the neighbors, advocates, and leaders doing community-strengthening, life-changing work long before this grant.

In the weeks ahead, we'll share the stories of these community leaders and what happens when local voices are trusted, equipped, and supported to lead.

Juneteenth is a day worth pausing for.

It marks a moment when freedom — long promised — finally reached those who had been waiting. And it honors the resilience, faith, and contributions of a people who never stopped believing it would come.

At BCM, we serve Greater New Orleans because we believe every person deserves to be seen, supported, and strengthened. Today, we take a moment to recognize what this day means — and the community it honors.

Last week, BCM's chaplaincy team joined more than 500 professional chaplains at the Association of Professional Chaplains Annual Conference in New Orleans.

APC is the largest organization of its kind in the country, and this year, New Orleans was its home.

BCM served as a conference sponsor, and Larry Johnson, BCM's VP of Chaplaincy Services, led a workshop on BCM's response to the Bourbon Street terrorist attack — bringing our community's experience into a national conversation about how chaplains show up in the hardest moments.

We're grateful for the opportunity to contribute to that conversation and proud of our team that carries this work forward.

Meet Julienne Louis-Anderson, BCM's new Education Program Officer.

Julienne brings broad experience across education, nonprofit leadership, and community engagement to her role reviewing grant requests, developing partnerships, and strengthening BCM's investments across the region. She has worked as a classroom educator, teacher coach, grant manager, and nonprofit director — all focused on supporting children and families. She holds a Bachelor's in Political Science from Howard University and an MA in Educational Leadership from Xavier University of Louisiana.

When she's not at the office, you'll find Julienne recharging at the lake with her daughter, husband, and dog.

We're glad to have her on the team!

Please join us in welcoming Jocelyn Pinkerton as BCM's Grants Program Officer!

Jocelyn brings deep experience in public health, crisis response, and community advocacy to her role reviewing grant requests, developing strategic initiatives, and evaluating the impact of Health and Public Safety funding. Before joining BCM, she served in the City of New Orleans Health Department's Office of Violence Prevention. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor.

Ask Jocelyn what she loves most about her work, and the answer is the partnerships — connecting with local organizations doing real, consistent work to improve health and well-being in our community. When she's not at the office, you might find her designing creative Mardi Gras costumes.

We're glad to have her at the table.

Frances Hawkins, RN, is retiring after nearly 20 years leading Congregational Wellness at BCM. Her leadership shaped programs and partnerships that continue to serve our community.

Sharon Burel, RN, will step into the interim lead role with more than a decade at BCM and the institutional knowledge to carry this work forward with continuity and care. Please join us in celebrating Frances and in welcoming Sharon — our commitment to this work and to our community remains unchanged.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It's a reminder that the freedoms we carry into our communities — to serve, to heal, to show up for one another — were paid for by those who gave everything.
