New blog post: The Lightning-Struck Tree

As storm season gathers over New Orleans, we reflect on the old image of the lightning-struck tree: a symbol of disruption, divine power, and transformation. From early tarot’s La Foudre to sacred oak lore, Irminsûl, Seahenge, and ritual practice, this piece explores what happens when heaven strikes the rooted world below.

It's certainly been a cold Candlemas, here in New Orleans! Has me thinking of how times like these need to bring us together, not separate. New blog post:

Imbolc, or Candlemas, represents the dark womb of the year. We light a candle in this long night, knowing the days are getting longer and the promise of spring lies somewhere past the horizon. This is a time to remember hope in the darkest, coldest, harshest of times—and this hope is precisely why we have so many prognosticatory traditions associated with early February: the groundhog seeing his shadow, or Candlemas being fair and bright, meaning winter will take another flight.

Coming together for the Winter Lights festival is a communal acknowledgement that this, too, shall pass. We are indeed in dark times. We may feel that we live in occupied territory. As our ancestors cared for one another in times of privation, our coming together is key to our survival and sanity. In this moment of darkness, we turn to an ancient truth: that brotherhood—sacred, mystical, and defiant—has always been a light in the darkness for those who love outside the boundaries prescribed by the powerful.

Each full moon, we share a new post at The United Rite. This month: “Winter’s First Descent Through the Dolmen Arch.”

As the veil of autumn lifts and the first cool hush of winter settles over the land, we cross a seasonal threshold. The first month of winter is not just a time of cold and retreat; it is a passage into the sacred tomb. We pass through the dolman arch into the barrow mound of the yearly cycle. It is the descent into the Earth’s dreaming body, where silence reigns and the seeds of rebirth are held in darkness.

This is the time of Samhain and Yule, when the sun wanes and the nights stretch long. Nature folds inward. The leaves have fallen, the harvest is stored, and the soil lies fallow. We enter the tomb not in fear, but in reverence. It is here, in the womb of stone and shadow, that the mysteries of life and death whisper their truths...

“In these pages, you will find wisdom and defiance drawn from the enduring legacy of witches who came before us. This is not just a book—it is a call to action, an invocation of power, and a reminder that magic is, at its core, transformative.” –from the foreword by Dave Gaddy author of The Simple Magick of Wild Things: The Journey of a Southern Male Wytch.
