⚠️ MEDICINE, MIND & SPIRIT

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT DRUGS?

This is NOT a message saying every prescription medication is evil.

God can use doctors, medicine, and medical knowledge to help people. Scripture itself recognizes medicinal treatment (Luke 10:34; 1 Timothy 5:23).

But as Christians, we should also be willing to ask difficult questions:

What are we putting into our bodies?
Why are we taking it?
What happens when we become dependent on it?
And are we looking to a substance to do what only God can ultimately do?

📖 THE WORD “PHARMAKEIA”

The Greek word φαρμακεία — pharmakeia appears in passages including:

Galatians 5:20 — listed among the works of the flesh and commonly translated sorcery/witchcraft.

Revelation 9:21 — connected with sorceries.

Revelation 18:23 — Babylon's sorcery is associated with the deception of the nations.

The word has a connection to drugs, potions, poisoning, and magical practices, but we should not make the mistake of saying that every modern prescription is therefore “witchcraft.”

The biblical warning goes deeper:

DRUGS CAN BE USED TO HEAL — OR TO HARM, DECEIVE, INTOXICATE, OR CONTROL.

And Scripture repeatedly warns us about drunkenness, lack of self-control, bo***ge, deception, and allowing anything to master us.

«“I will not be brought under the power of any.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:12»

📊 BY THE NUMBERS

14.2 MILLION Americans age 12+ misused prescription psychotherapeutic drugs in 2022.

That included:

🔴 8.5 MILLION — prescription pain relievers
🟠 4.8 MILLION — prescription tranquilizers or sedatives
🟣 3.7 MILLION — benzodiazepines
🔵 4.3 MILLION — prescription stimulants

And in 2023:

💊 Nearly 8.6 MILLION Americans reported misusing prescription opioids.

⚠️ More than 5 MILLION reported a prescription opioid use disorder.

💀 Nearly 308,000 people died from overdoses involving prescription opioids between 1999 and 2023.

😴 ANXIETY & SLEEP MEDICATIONS

The FDA now requires its strongest Boxed Warning for benzodiazepines because of risks including:

• Abuse and misuse
• Addiction
• Physical dependence
• Dangerous withdrawal
• Seizures
• Overdose and death

In 2019, approximately 92 MILLION benzodiazepine prescriptions were dispensed in U.S. outpatient pharmacies.

And the FDA warns that combining benzodiazepines with opioids, alcohol, or other depressants can increase the risk of serious harm, including overdose and death.

🧠 WHEN WE'RE HURTING...

Stress.

Anxiety.

Depression.

Trauma.

Insomnia.

Chronic pain.

Addiction.

Mental and emotional suffering.

These are real problems—and Christians should never shame someone for seeking help.

But we also shouldn't automatically assume:

“A pill will fix me.”

Sometimes medication may be appropriate.

Sometimes counseling is needed.

Sometimes changes in lifestyle are needed.

Sometimes addiction requires intensive help.

And always, we need God.

✝️ JESUS MUST REMAIN THE SOURCE.

Medicine can treat a symptom.

Medicine can manage pain.

Medicine can stabilize a condition.

But medicine cannot replace:

God's presence.
God's wisdom.
God's truth.
God's forgiveness.
God's transformation.
God's power to make us new.

«“Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”
— Ephesians 5:18»

The answer isn't:

“Never take medicine.”

The answer is:

“Don't surrender your body, mind, or identity to anything.”

Ask questions.

Know the risks.

Read the warnings.

Get a second opinion when appropriate.

Don't mix medications with alcohol or other substances without medical guidance.

And never abruptly stop medications such as benzodiazepines without speaking with a qualified medical professional, because withdrawal can be dangerous.

🙏 BE WISE. BE SOBER. BE DISCERNING.

Your body matters.
Your mind matters.
Your soul matters.

Don't blindly trust a prescription.

Don't blindly reject medicine either.

TEST EVERYTHING.
SEEK WISDOM.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TAKING.
AND ABOVE ALL — KEEP JESUS AT THE CENTER.

«“All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:12»

The goal isn't fear.
The goal is discernment.

⚠️ LOVE CANNOT BE FAKED. ⚠️

It can be imitated for a season.
Performed.
Spoken about.
Preached.

But real love is evidence of spiritual maturity.

Paul said:
📖 “When I became a man, I put away childish things.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:11

And in the same chapter he says:
📖 “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face…”
— 1 Corinthians 13:12

Paul understood something powerful:

Gifts are important…
but maturity is greater.

Tongues will cease.
Prophecy will pass away.
Knowledge is partial.

But:
📖 “Now abideth faith, hope, charity [love], these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:13

Why?

Because love reflects the heart of God.

Not emotional weakness.
Not passive tolerance.
Not pretending evil is good.

Biblical love is holy.
Pure.
Patient.
Truthful.
Self-controlled.

Galatians says:
📖 “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…”
— Galatians 5:22-23

Notice love comes first.

The rest flows from it.

The closer we grow to Christ…
the more His nature should grow in us.

And Revelation says:
📖 “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
— Revelation 19:10

Real revelation should lead people toward Jesus…
and Jesus is love in action.

Love is not weakness.
It is the reason for strength.

Love casts out fear.
Love gives sacrifice meaning.
Love gives power purpose.
Love gives truth compassion.
Love is what moved Christ to save us.

Paul said he had not yet attained perfection, but continued pressing forward toward the high calling of God.

That means maturity in love is a journey.

We grow into it.

Less ego.
Less pride.
Less self-centeredness.

More Christ.

Real spiritual maturity is not just power, gifting, or knowledge.

It is becoming more like Jesus.

And Jesus loved completely.

⚠️ IF WE DO NOT LOVE…
WE MAY NOT SEE GOD CLEARLY. ⚠️

This is not meant to condemn people.

It’s meant to reveal something.

Scripture says:
📖 “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
— 1 John 4:8

And John also says:
📖 “He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.”
— 1 John 2:9

That’s not God trying to crush us.

That’s God giving us an indicator light.

A mirror.

A warning sign that maybe our picture of Him has become distorted.

Because you can know verses…
and still not know His heart.

You can talk spiritual…
and still carry bitterness, pride, cruelty, envy, and hatred.

Paul said:
📖 “When I was a child, I spake as a child… but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:11

Maturity in Christ is not just knowledge.

It’s growing in love.

But love is not weakness either.

Love forgives…
but it does not celebrate evil.

Love turns the other cheek…
but it still confronts darkness.

Love has grace…
but it also has truth.

Jesus loved sinners deeply…
and still told people:
“Go and sin no more.”

Biblical love is not passive.
It is courageous enough to tell the truth without hatred.

Real love:

- prays for enemies
- corrects with humility
- refuses revenge
- refuses bitterness
- refuses cruelty
- refuses pride

Love is not pretending evil is good.

Love is carrying the heart of God while dealing with brokenness.

The more we know God…
the more we should begin to look like Him.

And God is love.
