Have you told your child lately that you love them, you are proud of them, and how blessed you are to be their parent? You may say to yourself, "oh they know it". That may be true, it never hurts to reinforce the love you have planted in them- like us, they need to be reminded of just how LOVED they are.
As I was boarding the plane this morning in California to fly yo DC to move my daughter into her college dorm, I was flooded with emotions as I reflected on the first 18 wonderful years of her life. I cried as I texted her this message. I love my baby!
I just texted her this message:
"Princess, we are SO proud of you! College is going to be a great experience!
We have given you all that we have to get you to this point. Now go forth, spread your wings and SOAR to where the Lord has gone before you...He has already prepared the path for you!
You are right where He wants you to be at this season of your life. Make wise choices and He will astonish you with the plans He will unfold right before all of our eyes for your life (Jeremiah 29:11). We love you more than you may ever know. We will always be here to support you through the difficult times, celebrate your accomplishments, pray for you every day, and love you ALWAYS!
Live your life to where you have NO REGRETS! Take calculated risks, dance in the rain, stop to smell the roses you see, and ALWAYS trust in the Lord to protect, provide and guide you with His Wisdom in every decision- great or small (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Finally, if you do these things, you will never have to give in to fear or anxiety (even though those times will come amd the weapons do form)...sing and worship your way through each of those emotions, as they will end and not last always (Isaiah 54:17). They are temporary and will wash over you like a wave, and THEN they WILL LEAVE (Philippians 4:6-8).
You will make it through each of these challenges...you will live, thrive and not die so that you can declare the Goodness of God (Psalm 118:17)!
With all my heart-
I love you,
Daddy

As a therapist in private practice, one of the techniques I use with some clients is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT for short. It is designed to help reduced stress, improve relationships and help clients live their best lives. Sound interesting? Keep reading.
DBT is comprised of four main pillars that focus on teaching an individual skills in the areas of mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance.
I personally use one of the exercises I often assign to my clients around this time of the year (see below).
I call it Reflections & Resolutions. It helps with being mindful (or really being present in the moment). One of the biggest ways we rob ourselves of opportunities for joy in the present can be found in how we forget to add up the little victories we gain throughout the year. It is easy to overlook those emails you promised to return and did, or that game on which you finally made it to that next level, or finally organizing that closet or garage (or section thereof). You get the point. Each small victory remembered, focused on, relished and experienced increases our resilience and will to win with the next challenge or adversity we face.
So, what did you accomplish in 2023? What worked? What lessons did you learn? What do you want to change for 2024?
One of the of my New Year's Resolutions for 2024 is fully committing to using ALL that I currently have in my hands and exhausting it ALL before I try anything else new. In reviewing what worked and did not work for me in 2023, I honestly bit off more than I could chew out of excitement, and this ended with me lacking in follow-through. Lesson learned. At my worst, I can be stubborn and that cost me in 2023...no more in 2024!
Try this exercise and let me know if any of it resonates with you.
Be intentional about your mental health this year! While I am not personally taking on any new clients right now, we have several therapists at our practice who are. We accept all major insurance plans, and now we accept Medicare, as well. Call us at Love One Another Community Development Center at 615-257-8457 to schedule an appointment and begin living your best life!
I challenge you to be a better version of yourself (and treat yourself better) this year than you were (and did) in 2023.
Do not set one goal for 2024 until you have taken an honest assessment of your 2023.
Cheers!
