In 1948, a group of people in the vicinity of Due West Avenue began holding spontaneous prayer meetings in their homes. By September 1, 1949, God had laid it on their hearts and they came to ask Inglewood Baptist Church to sponsor them as a mission. Their request was granted and with a tent on loan from the Nashville Baptist Association, the Dickerson Mission began holding services on a lot owned

by Mr. Cunniff at the corner of Dickerson Road and Due West Avenue in October 1949. At the time Bro. Martin was serving as the pastor. When the tent was destroyed in a storm in late November1949, Mr. Cunniff was lead to donate a lot at the corner of Port Drive and New Due West Avenue. The mission began holding services in a building constructed by its members and members of Inglewood Baptist Church in December 1949. Over the next few years the mission grew and was able to handle its own finances by October 1, 1951. On September 6, 1953, the mission met with representatives of local Baptist churches and formed a council for the purpose of officially constituting a new church. There were 88 charter members who all voted to constitute themselves into Dickerson Road Baptist Church. In doing so, they also voted to adopt the Church Covenant, The New Hampshire Articles of Faith, and a 10 percent donation of their budget to World Missions. On October 7, 1953, the church voted to petition the Nashville BAPTIST Association for membership, as well as to purchase the original lot at the corner of Dickerson Road and Due West Avenue from Mr. Cunniff. On November 1, 1953, Bro. Roy Sears began his ministry as the first pastor of the new Dickerson Road Baptist Church. The church had outgrown the building on the Port Drive property and the first unit of the new educational building on the new property was moved into in September 1954. Within a few years, the basement of what would become the auditorium was constructed and the church began using this for worship. Over the years, the Church has seen pastors and members come and go, but it remains that the original purpose of the mission has stood strong, to serve our risen Lord Jesus Christ.
