Sometimes when we think of Faith we think it’s something that starts with us…

Faith starts with God’s commands and God’s direction. It doesn’t start with our desire, how much we want something, or even how much we might believe in something.

We see several of these moments within the story of Peter. Moments where he appears to be immensely “faithful”, but is not acting in accordance with God’s will. These are actually times of bravado and defensiveness.

Yet, even in these moments— Jesus is faithful to Peter.

In Matthew 14, we read the story of the disciples (who are sailing in a storm) being afraid in the middle of the night as they see someone walking towards them across the surface of water. We know it was Jesus, but until he speaks to them they assume He is a ghost. He says “Do not be afraid. Take courage. I am here!”

Though we can’t know exactly what exact beliefs the Disciples held onto, we do know that in the First Century many people saw the sea as a holding place for chaos and evil spirits. It was viewed as a place of immense mystery. This context adds layers to the passage that we might not see otherwise.

The miracle of Jesus walking on water wasn’t just showmanship to impress the Disciples. It is God revealing his sovereignty over both nature and the unknown in order to bring them comfort. They did not need to be afraid because the Lord was with them.

Our faith is not a conjuring up of ourselves, it is a belief that God walks on the unknown and is sovereign over it.

Faith is not wishing hard enough to make God do your will.

Faith is assurance of what cannot be seen.

Faith is not present only in victory, or success.

Faith is trusting Jesus when He says, “Do not be afraid.”

We often ask, “what is God’s plan for my life?”. His plan is for you to follow him. Jesus is the Path.

Discipleship is about following the person of Jesus not a path. Wherever he leads us is where we should follow.

It’s easy to get bogged down in the debates and discussions of what it means to be a Disciples of Jesus today. If we strip back all the complexities, what were the first three steps The Disciples took in following Jesus? We can see all of these laid out in John 1.

Jesus asks no different of us today. Imagine these as footprints on an old dance diagram… and follow along.

The three simple steps of discipleship we see reflected in John 1 are no different from the ones Jesus asks us to take today.

John uses a word that goes beyond just noticing something to describe the first step in this journey…

Behold.

Let this take your full attention. Find what you obsess over at night and what captures you in the morning, and you will discover what you “behold.”

To be a disciple of Jesus is first to behold Him. To worship Him. Let Him remind you of His power, grace, compassion, and care. Divert your attention away from your anxieties as you behold Jesus. Who do you see? What is He like?

What you behold will ultimately shape who you become.

This Sunday we will be beginning a study through the book of Peter and learning more about this Apostle’s journey of discipleship. Peter was an inconsistent mess of a man, fluctuating between bravado and brokenness, but after the Holy Spirit indwelled him in Acts, we see something beautifully new: boldness. From a Simon to Peter by the power of Jesus.

The last of our core values series and our final core value itself: Sent by Christ

Jesus’ prayer for all believers was for us to be sent into the world, just as He was sent by His Father. His heart for His Church is that we be filled with joy, and insulated from Satan, but never isolated from the world 🌎

As a result, it is our desire to equip and encourage believers to engage the communities surrounding them with the Gospel. Our prayer is that every believer would be so overcome by the power and love of God, that they would demonstrate and proclaim His truth and goodness everywhere they go!

Our emphasis is not on how many gather on Sundays, but how many are impacted the rest of the week.

When reading about Jesus as “The Good Shepherd”, it’s very easy to skip over the context of the audience of this passage. Who was this directed towards? And, what was immediate the issue being addressed?

Knowing these key details not only helps us better understand the context and purpose of the teaching— but also allows us to better apply it to our own lives.

As our shepherd, Jesus calms our fears, and reminds us that we are not alone. We can hear his
voice, directing us, calming us, convicting us, all for the purpose of abundant life. Not necessarily a successful life, or a comfortable life, but an abundant life. Abundant life is peaceful, fruitful, and meaningful, but definitely not without hardships.

We can contrast this with the enemy’s voice which constantly temps us with comfort, but
always leads to condemnation. Fear, hopelessness, despair, and disconnectedness are the
eventual outcome.

How much are you willing to allow him to take from you? Has he tried to steal your time, then convince you its “too late”? Has he killed your intimacy with God and others, and whispered “nobody wants you”? Do you believe all hope has been destroyed, believing “you cant change”? That’s condemnation.

A sentence passed, with no hope for pardon.

But Jesus says, “Do not be afraid”. The Lord’s conviction leads to freedom. His correction is due to His great love for you. He has not and will not give up on you. He hates sin, because it destroys what is
valuable to Him, namely you! He calls to you that “it’s not too late” and “come to me you who are weary”. He is our Hope.

We believe that Christ intended the believer to live in community with others.

Restoration Church is committed to transparent relationships with the goal of transformation. It is in the confession of sin and the acceptance of truth that Christ shapes the heart and mind of the believer into His likeness. God’s people are always in process, and are diverse in personality and abilities.

Our prayer is that we would be rooted and grounded in the love of Christ, bearing with one another’s faults and failures as we all unite for the purposes of God.
