This Sunday we are continuing our sermon series based on Wesley's The Duty of Constant Communion. Over time, the Methodist Church got into the habit of monthly (or even rarer) opportunities to participate in Communion. This is a product of our history in the United States where circuit riders (pastors on horseback) were appointed to several churches and would only be present for worship monthly. In the Church of England, in which Wesley was a priest, church members were only required to partake three times a year. A common reply, today and in Wesley's time, is that Communion should be special and having it every week lessens its impact. He reminds us that it is an invitation to salvation- how can frequency lessen how special that is?

Opportunity for Reflection: Should encounters with God always feel special? How often would you prefer to take communion? How have you felt about Christ UMC’s love to weekly communion?
