The Church has celebrated the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary for many centuries, traditionally on September 8. Scripture does not tell us about Mary’s birth, but early Christian tradition speaks of her parents, Joachim and Anna, who prayed faithfully for a child. Their story reflects the special role Mary would have in God’s plan of salvation.

Mary’s birth points us toward the coming of Christ. Through her, God prepared the way for Jesus, the Savior of the world. She is often seen as the dawn of salvation, bringing hope before the light of Christ fully shines.

Reflection

Every birth is a reminder of God’s gift of new life and hope. Mary’s birth is especially joyful because her life would lead to the birth of Jesus.

As we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may her example inspire us to trust God, welcome His grace, and become instruments of peace and hope in the world.
