Faithful To The Truth

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” (Exodus 20:16 NASB)

Being a faithful person includes being faithful to the truth. There are exceptions to lying. In N**i Germany, Christians lied about hiding Jews in their homes. That was appropriate. However, to tell a lie about someone to tarnish their reputation or harm them is a sin. We lie to seek revenge, make ourselves look better, or to help us play the role of a victim. Being faithful includes being faithful to the truth. Talk to God about your relationship with the truth. Be honest with yourself and Him.

God Is Good

The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him. (Nahum 1:7 NIV)

The goodness of the LORD is not just a feel-good adjective. God’s goodness makes Him a refuge. If we are able to trust Him and run to Him for refuge, we are the winners. God is good, all the time. And His goodness makes Him a safe and trustworthy refuge. Celebrate and worship your good God.

Family Sundays are worship services that we close down our older kids children's ministry and welcome everyone into the same worship service. They are geared to be welcoming to families with children as well as giving our amazing NVKids workers a Sunday of refreshment. The Nursery does remain open for ages 0 to 4. The rest of the kids and adults are all together and the service time will be limited to 45 minutes. The service will also include some portion targeted for kids.

Pursued By Goodness

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalms 23:6 NIV)

We are not good, but God is. In His goodness, He pursues us. Think about that for a moment. The writer of Psalm 23, King David, recognized that God’s goodness would follow him all his days. His relationship with God was not born out of David’s goodness, but God’s. The principle that holds true for David also holds true for us. Our relationship with God is born out of His goodness and love, not ours. Take a few moments and celebrate that today. Regardless of the good or bad you have done, God pursues you because of His goodness. Praise God.

Simple To Say

Turn from evil and do good. (Psalms 34:14 NASB)

The passage above is much easier to say than it is to do. Evil is in us wanting to satisfy itself. Evil is prowling around us looking for a foothold. Evil lives in apathy and ignorance. Evil is in the temptation to act outside God’s will. While we may be bombarded with opportunity for evil, we are also called, rescued, and empowered to follow God and do His good work. Take a breath and clear your mind for just a moment. Ask God to help you hear His voice through the noise and chaos. Rejoice in God and your salvation. Resist evil. Run to your Father in heaven.

We Can Do Good Deeds

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (1 Peter 2:12 NIV)

Jesus said that none of us are good, only God is good (Luke 18:19). We have a sinful nature (our flesh) which keeps us from being entirely good (Galatians 5:17). Although we are not good, we are still capable of doing good deeds. In the verse above, the apostle Peter describes our good deeds as though they are witnesses of God and that pagans may be drawn to God via our good deeds. Think about that for a moment. In the context of this verse, what makes a deed “good”? According to the passage, a “good deed” is one that points to and glorifies God. Take a few moments and consider your deeds. Talk to God about the goodness of your deeds.

The Attractiveness Of Evil

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21 NASB)

When someone does something to hurt us, either physically or emotionally, our natural desire is to retaliate. We think, “Wow, it will feel so good when I get them back and hurt them like they hurt me.” Yep. And the difficulty is, for a moment, it does feel good to get revenge. Dang. Read the verse above again. Revenge does feel good, but God has called us to something better. Before you react with your emotions and pursue revenge, talk with God about His goodness. He has been good to us with forgiveness and grace and kindness, even though we did not deserve it. Ask God for help to respond to evil with good.
