“Piety denotes the reverence which we give to our faith and to our country,” writes St. Thomas Aquinas. “And since God is the Father of all, the worship of God is also called piety.”

The Virtue of Piety directs our love and respect for what is holy, particularly how we give filial worship to God as our loving heavenly Father. The gift of piety filial respect for God as a loving Father, a generous and childlike love, so that one wants to please God, even if it means making sacrifices, and a loving obedience toward the teachings and commandments of the Church, respecting them as expressions of God’s love for us. Piety perfects the virtue of justice, enabling us to fulfill our obligations to God and neighbor, and to do so willingly and joyfully.

“The name of Jesus, pronounced with reverence and affection, has a kind of power to soften the heart.”

St. Philip Neri had a warm and attractive personality. He gave up a life of a businessman and instead formed an apostolate as a layman. Philip became a priest in 1551, ministering to the sick, the poor, and pilgrims. He was a great confessor and founded the Oratory for priests. By his own example, he led others to have a devotion to the Holy Spirit. Philip enthusiastically encouraged others to engage in the joyful sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist. St. Philip is the patron of: Rome, the US Special Forces, humor and joy. A few ways to celebrate: head to confession, crack some jokes, serve the poor, thank your priest for his vocation and providing the sacraments.

50 days after Easter we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit! It is the "birthday" of the Catholic Church. "On the day of Pentecost when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end, Christ’s Passover is fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, manifested, given, and communicated as a divine person: of his fullness, Christ, the Lord, pours out the Spirit in abundance." CCC 731

A few simple ways to celebrate, have a bonfire or cookout this evening, make a birthday cake for the church and don't forget the candles, pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Remember your own confirmation and ask the Lord to renew the graces you received. Wear red or other flame colors to Mass to symbolize the flame of the Holy Spirit. Teach your children about the Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
