WCC Daily Devotional # GOD IS BIGGER THAN WE IMAGINE
**Thursday, October 29, 2026** Scripture: John 4:19–24**
*“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”* — John 4:24 (ESV)
Have you ever stopped to think about just how big God really is?
In John chapter 4, Jesus has a conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well. She came looking for water, but she walked away having encountered the living God. And somewhere in that conversation, Jesus teaches her something incredibly important about the nature of God.
He tells her, “God is spirit.”
Now, that might sound like a simple statement, but think about what it means. God isn't limited by time or space. He isn't confined to a building, a location, or even a particular moment in history. He's not more present in a church sanctuary than He is in your living room.
Sometimes we talk about going to church to "meet with God," and I understand what we mean by that. There's something special about gathering with other believers to worship. But the truth is, God doesn't stay at church when we leave on Sunday morning.
He's with you on Monday when you go to work. He's with you when you're sitting in traffic, when you're facing a difficult conversation, and when you're lying awake at night worrying about something you can't control.
**There is nowhere you can go where God is not present.**
Because God is infinite, His love and mercy aren't limited either.
We tend to put limits on things because that's how our world works. We have limited time, limited patience, limited resources, and, if we're being honest, sometimes a pretty limited supply of grace for other people. But God isn't like us.
His love doesn't run out. His mercy doesn't have an expiration date. And His grace isn't reserved for people who have managed to get their lives together.
Think about the Israelites in Exodus 32. They made a golden calf because they wanted a god they could see, touch, and understand. They tried to reduce the Creator of the universe to something they could control.
And I wonder if we sometimes do something similar. Maybe we don't build golden calves, but we can still try to make God fit inside our expectations. We want Him to work according to our schedules, answer our prayers the way we think He should, and operate within the boundaries we've established.
But God is so much bigger than anything we can imagine.
And that's good news, because it means His ability to love us, forgive us, and restore us is bigger than we can imagine, too.
Maybe today you're carrying something heavy. Maybe you've made mistakes you're still struggling to forgive yourself for. Maybe you feel distant from God because life has gotten complicated.
Remember this: **You may feel far from God, but that doesn't mean God has moved away from you.**
The same God who met a Samaritan woman beside a well is still meeting people right where they are today.
And that's part of what it means for us to be the church where we live. We don't have to bring people into a building before God can begin working in their lives. We can demonstrate His love, extend His grace, and share His truth wherever He has placed us.
So today, take comfort in knowing that the God we worship is bigger than our problems, greater than our failures, and closer than we sometimes realize.
**Prayer:** Heavenly Father, thank You that You are not limited by time or place. Forgive us when we try to make You fit into our expectations. Help us recognize Your presence throughout our day and reflect Your love and grace to the people around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
