Fathers Day
Today our nation gives thanks to God for the gift of our fathers, living and deceased, honoring their irreplaceable role in our lives. In this week's Gospel, Jesus reveals the generosity, goodness, and protective love of God the Father. Every father — including godfathers and spiritual fathers, our priests — is called to live out this paternal role by generously and faithfully serving the children entrusted to him.

Beyond providing for physical needs, fathers are called to give of themselves for the spiritual good of their children's souls. The most enduring gift a father can give is the truth of our Catholic Faith: knowing and loving Jesus above all things. Just as he shares in giving the gift of human life, a father who lives in the light of Truth, open to the Holy
Spirit, also gives spiritual life to his children. A father's role in his children's faith is paramount. Studies show that a father actively engaged in his own faith has the greatest impact on whether his children — sons and daughters alike — continue practicing the Faith into adulthood, often more so than the mother, however devout she may be. When a father fully embraces his role as spiritual leader of the family, he gives life to his wife and children — not only in this world, but for the world to come.

Let us pray for the fathers of our parish, through the intercession of St. Joseph, our spiritual father, that they may always fulfill their life-giving role, especially in the spiritual lives of their children. And let us pray for all fathers who have died, that the Good Lord grant them eternal rest and let the light of His face shine upon them forever.
