In this message from Matthew 22, Pastor Steve Prestridge explores the parable of the wedding feast, unpacking how Jesus uses earthly stories with heavenly meanings to reveal the design of God’s kingdom. The sermon highlights how the king's invitation to the wedding feast mirrors the consistent call given throughout Scripture by prophets like Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Hosea—and echoed by John the Baptist and Jesus—to turn away from sin and enter the kingdom of heaven.
A central emphasis of the message is the danger of rejecting God's invitation and resisting the Holy Spirit, much like the religious leaders of Jesus' day or the tenants in the preceding parables. Pastor Steve addresses the common trap of trying to earn salvation or make up for bad decisions through self-driven good works, reminding the congregation that salvation cannot be bought. Instead, true believers are made worthy solely by accepting Christ's once-for-all sacrifice, as seen in Hebrews 10:1-8, where the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus replaces the old system of continual offerings.
Ultimately, the sermon calls believers to a lifestyle of genuine repentance, defined as a fundamental change of mind, heart, and direction. As noted in 2 Peter 3:9, God is patient and does not wish for any to perish, but desires all to reach repentance. Listeners are encouraged to stop living under self-rule, rest in the finished work of Christ, and accept God's gracious invitation to live faithfully in His kingdom today.
You belong to God because you've been bought with a price, and it was a heavy price.
