Zao MKE Church

Zao MKE Church Jesus Rooted. Justice Centered. Radically Inclusive. We explicitly affirm the life, value, and worth of LGBTQIA people, and the Movement for Black Lives.
(231)

JESUS ROOTED: We root our community in the life, person, and teaching of Jesus Christ as represented by the Christian Bible: a radical brown Palestinian peasant, the God who is with us, preaching love, justice, and resistance. We look to Jesus to speak truth into our present circumstances through both the historical context of the bible and the universal truths of Jesus’ teaching. JUSTICE CENTERED

: The Gospel of Jesus Christ leads us directly into the work of justice – the active and engaged struggle for all to be free, both spiritually and physically. We stand with Jesus, who always stands with the oppressed and marginalized, against those powers and principalities of injustice. RADICALLY INCLUSIVE: The call for justice issued by the gospel of Jesus Christ is for the purpose of reconciling all things into wholeness with God. To the end, we seek to build a radically inclusive community and world, wherein all people are valued in the fullness of who God has made them to be – affirmed, celebrated, and loved.

We made our match and more! THANK YOU for showing up for each other in community. Together, we brought in $12,411 over the past six weeks. With our $10k match, that brings us to a total raised of over $22k, which will go a long way in making sure our next steps in building a network of safe harbors are supported and sustainable. As we complete our transition to a network of digitally connected house churches next month, we look forward to sharing more about how the Spirit is moving in this new, more expansive Zao. Thank you for being part of what we are building together.

Right now, we are seeing an exponential increase in threats to the safety of many in our community, including trans and q***r folks and immigrants. But together, we keep us safe. We are called to build networks of resistance and care for the most vulnerable.

Zao has heard the call, and we hope you have too. As we’ve shared, Zao will be moving to a new model of ministry in the next season. We’ll be transitioning from a single-site, traditional church to an interconnected network of house churches, which we’re calling “harbors.”

This model, and the depth of community we’ve already created, uniquely positions Zao to reach those most in need of connection and safety in this moment. This potential now extends beyond Milwaukee across the country and world. These harbors are intended as places of deep community building, justice work, and sanctuary for the oppressed and marginalized.

We want to build a firm and sustainable foundation for this network of safe harbors, and to do that we need resources. We’re asking those who believe in this vision to step up through tangible support. During this Easter season, between now and Pentecost on May 24th, a generous friend of Zao has offered to match up to $10,000 in funds raised by our community.

The majority of our budget goes towards paying the people who are laboring to lead us into next season of Zao's ministry, and those funds come almost exclusively from what we raise in individual donations. That means that in order to build what our community needs in this moment, we need you. Will you help us build safe harbors by making a donation today? Give here: zaomke.org/give

After meeting in our harbors last week, we’re back to our typical service at our Kenwood building this Sunday, March 1st! Over the next few months, we’ll be moving gradually toward the full implementation of our new model. Meanwhile, we want to make sure you know where to find us!

We will continue to hold regular services at the Kenwood Avenue building most weeks through June 7th.

However, on the following Sundays, we will meet in our new house churches (“harbors”) in lieu of a regular service: March 22, April 12, April 26, May 3, May 17, and May 31. On harbor Sundays, there will also be no livestream on Youtube or Facebook.

For every Sunday not listed above, we’ll see you at Kenwood!

Please note that June 7th will be our final service at the Kenwood building—a special Pride Month celebration you won’t want to miss. More information to come on that soon!

If you have questions about our new model, or would like to get connected to a harbor, reach out to [email protected].
