St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Mission: Transforming lives through meaningful relationships with God in Jesus Christ. St. Mark's is a warm and welcoming congregation on Milwaukee's East Side.

We are a vibrant community of sojourners and seekers who represent a diverse array of backgrounds, perspectives and life experiences. All are welcome! Mark's is a beautiful church both within its friendly parish and aesthetic stature. The church is nearly 125 years old and of the Gothic style with high-vaulted ceilings with wooden trusses. Stained glass windows line the aisles. Seating capacity in

the church is 220, additionally, the chapel seats 20. Outside, cloisters enclose a courtyard garden. The courtyard is a peaceful, beautiful place beloved by many in the community. Sunday services are at 8 & 10 a.m. in person. Throughout the school year, Sunday School meets during the first half of the 10 a.m. service, ending in time for the children to join their parents at Communion. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion, no matter which church you might belong to. Following Sunday worship services, we gather for coffee, refreshments and conversation. Visitors are always welcome! Our parish prioritizes the sharing of our time, talents and resources with individuals and communities in need. We have a number of community events, like the Downer Classic Corn Roast in summer and a pumpkin sale in fall, where proceeds go to local and international non-profits. For more information, please contact the church office at 414-962-0500. All are welcome at St. Mark's!

As fall approaches, Sunday School and the Nursery will be starting back up on September 13. This year we will be separating the Nursery (up to age 5) from Sunday School (1st-6th grade). For the Nursery, we are in the process of trying to hire a nursery worker but are also asking for one parent volunteer each Sunday. We also need a parent volunteer to help with Sunday School.

Eucharist in the Wilderness — Wednesday, August 19, at 6 p.m. (Riverside Park)

As part of the conclusion to this summer’s discussion of Daniel Cooperrider’s Speak With the Earth and It Will Teach You, we will have a Eucharist in the wilderness. This will be in place of the regular Midweek Eucharist held in the chapel. We’ll meet at the stone arch in Riverside Park and walk to different spots in the park. All are welcome to participate, even if you’ve not attended the book discussions.

We're back on schedule with Be Still this month, on the first Friday of the month. Join us tomorrow night at 7 p.m. for our Be Still contemplative prayer service. Patterned on the liturgies of the Taizé community in France, it is evening prayer for all Christian faiths. A simple, meditative form of worship, calling us to dwell deeply on Christ’s presence around and within us, the service is composed of Mantra songs (like “Jesus, Remember Me”) and prayerful silence. Short readings and intercessory prayers guide the focus of the prayer in a candle-lit environment.
