Mount Moriah Baptist Church has been in the present location, 2737 N. 4th Street since June 21, 1964. Dr. Kenneth A. Bowen was the pastor from 1958-1993 when the Lord called him home. The mortgage for 2747 N. 4th Street was burned in 1978. The church family remained steadfast in faith until Dr. Charles E. Thornhill become pastor on December 17, 1994, and remains our pastor to date. Dr. Charles E.
Thornhill was not a stranger to Mount Moriah, he served as assistant to pastor under Kenneth Bowen until he became the pastor of Mount Eagle Baptist Church in Racine, WI. Thornhill was a pastor of Greater Mt. Eagle Baptist for 23 plus years. Thornhill has a doctorate in both Ministry and Divinity. His degrees are from Saint Martin's College and Urban Bible College. He has over fifty years of preaching and teaching experience. Dr. Thornhill is an instructor with the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education and the Wisconsin General Baptist State Congress of Christian Education. Through the long struggle toward progress, only one of the seventeen charter members is still among the faithful. All others are deceased. Our membership has seen many changes over the years, from an average attendance in excess of 400 people to an average attendance of about seventy. As our population ages many are unable to handle the steps needed to reach the sanctuary or to go up the steps to use the bathrooms in the vestry/basement. Information from various contractors to put in a ramp and/or an elevator has been VERY costly. So the old Educational building at 419 W. Christina Lane was torn down and a smaller chapel is being constructed and faithfully called Phase 1 of our future building plan. The community around Mount Moriah Church is changing with many new town houses and other new constructions. If Mount Moriah is to rebuild its membership and continue to provide a welcoming, inviting environment for worship, fellowship and community involvement, we must rebuild. Funding is needed to assist us in this venture. The Pastor along with the board and our contractor thought it beast to build in two phases. This will allow us a place to worship while the main church is being built. We continue to ask God to grow the church in both breadth and depth.
