Yesterday, our church ministry leaders came together for a special training focused on our new sensory classroom and supporting children and families with extra support needs. A huge shout out to our sensory room team lead, Amanda Young, for leading this training! 👏

While many of our leaders may never serve directly in this classroom, we believe every leader should be equipped with the awareness, understanding, and compassion to help every family feel welcome and included.

We’ve seen the need in our community for families with sensory needs to attend church without unnecessary barriers and we are committed to creating a culture where every family feels they belong. Our goal is not to change children to fit the church, but to create a church where every child can experience the love of Jesus just as they are. 💙

Jesus isn't calling us to be flawless. He's calling us to become whole.

And that makes all the difference.

From today's devotional:

(Read Matthew 5:17-20)

Imagine for a moment the most faithful person you've ever met. The person who seems to embody everything good or valuable about religious life. The person who can do no wrong, but carefully does everything expected without failure. Now imagine if Jesus came along and said you need to be more righteous than that person. You may feel immediately overwhelmed or some version of imposter syndrome. In your mind, there may be nothing more futile than trying to be more righteous than that person.

That may have been what Jesus' disciples felt when they heard him say "unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." In the minds of first century Jews, the Pharisees and teachers of the law were the most righteous people on earth. They only felt that way because they understood righteousness to be careful observation of Moses. That's what the Pharisees and teachers of the law claimed; they observed the Law faithfully. To Jesus' Jewish audience, to be righteous meant you followed the rules without failure.

For Jesus righteousness is not based on what we do, but on what He does in us. We are righteous because we follow Him. We are righteous because we have been redeemed by Him. We are righteous because He has lovingly forgiven us. It's not based on our behaviors. It's based on His love and mercy.

Our prayer today: Lord Jesus, thank you for the righteousness that exceeds human expectation. Amen.

Maybe the most overlooked word in this passage is YOU.

"You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world." - Matthew 5:13-14

We've often turned these verses into a recruitment strategy. Jesus made them a declaration of identity. Before asking us to do anything he reminds us who we are.

Imagine what Midland could look like if more of us lived from that identity. Neighbors loving neighbors. Ordinary people reflecting the hope, peace, and grace of Jesus in our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.

YOU ARE.

Jesus calls us to follow him with faith and repentance, to be baptized, and to remember him at the table. That’s why our monthly rhythm is simple: three Sundays of communion, followed by baptism on the fourth. ✝

We want to follow Jesus in what he taught us to do, and help others follow him too, trusting the Holy Spirit to keep forming us along the way. 🕊
