Next Sunday, May 31 is Trinity Sunday and the 190th Anniversary of the Founding of Trinity Church in Michgan City. Do you have memories of Trinity? Marraige, Baptisim Confirmation? Picnics, Dances, Barker Hall events? Join us at 9am service, 600 Franklin Street with Bishop Doug Sparks celebrating Anglo Catholic Mass. Communiion is open to all baptized Chirstians. Following will be a reception in the mansion built for the Bishop in 1901 by John Barker. The sketch from the chuch archives is the 1836 church that sat at 422 Pine Street. The photo was provided by Josh McIntyre from the Michigan City Historical Society. I suspect this building was still standing until removed during the 1960’s urban renewal demolitions. There was no interest in historic preservation at the time. It would have been the oldest building in Michigan City.
The back of the sketch has this notation, “Bishop Kemper confirmed in this church. It was visited by Bishop Chase at an early day- The lot was owned by the City and the building was used as a City hall. Afterward bought and arranged for a church. The building still stands on Pine Street. – the tower was added for the church and opened in the private yard of Mr. McClain, and rent paid for the ground. –The bell in the tower was a gift was of Spanish orgin and supposed to have silver it its composition.”
