FRANCISCAN FRIDAY #4

Today we are reminded of the beauty of fraternity, humility, and love. St. Francis teaches us that our brothers and sisters deserve our care and respect, whether they are near or far from us. True Christian love is not measured by distance, convenience, or circumstance, but by the way we choose to honor and serve one another.

May we carry this reminder into our day: to love those around us with patience, to remember those who are far away, and to see every person as a beloved brother or sister in Christ. May the Lord help us grow in compassion, humility, and genuine fraternity. 🙏

VIERNES FRANCISCANO #4

”The Order was begun and developed under the particular protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The unconditional entrusting of self to Mary Immaculate as taught by St. Maximilian M. Kolbe is a real way to be open to the new challenges of mission, by listening to the Holy Spirit and by understanding the signs of the times. Our Seraphic Father, all the friar saints, and the martyr of charity, “the patron of difficult times…” (OFM Conv. Constitutions)

FEAST OF ST. CLARE OF ASSISI
Reflection: We are reminded today about faith and the persistent courage to live that faith. Today is the Feast of St. Clare of Assisi, a strong woman of faith and persistent, unwavering courage. We can look to St. Clare as a model of faithful Franciscan living. Even when the authority structures of her day wanted her to follow an already established Rule of Life, she courageously and persistently sought approval for a Form of Life that was written by a woman for women. Being a strong woman of faith, Clare did not tire of requesting that her Form of Life be approved. She wished to be faithful to the Gospel and, with that in heart and mind, she was persistent and courageous until she finally received papal approval for her Form of Life two days before she returned to God. How can I persistently and courageously live a faithful Gospel way of life? Perhaps there is something for which I am being called to stand and be a courageous witness to the Gospel.

Prayer: Most High, glorious God, may the example of Clare of Assisi impel us to love you with our whole heart and to seek your will in all events of our lives and our world with the complete trust that faith requires. With swift pace, light step, unswerving feet, may we go forward securely, joyfully, and swiftly. Amen.

FRANCISCAN FRIDAY #3

To receive God’s love completely, we are invited to hold nothing back. Every surrender becomes an opening for grace, every act of trust a deeper communion with Him.

//

VIERNES FRANCISCANO #3

Para recibir el amor de Dios por completo, estamos invitados a no retener nada. Cada rendición se convierte en una apertura para la gracia, cada acto de confianza en una comunión más profunda con Él.

Feast of Our Lady of the Angels (Portiuncula) – August 2

August 2nd is a special day for all Franciscans as we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula, the patronal feast of the Franciscan Order. When St. Francis was discerning his vocation, he heard the Lord tell him, “Go and rebuild my Church.” Francis understood this command literally and went to repair chapels that were deteriorating. The Portiuncula, or the “Little Portion,” dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels, was one of the three chapels he repaired. The chapel and the land belonged to the Benedictines since the 6th century when it was given to St. Benedict. However, the friars came to live at the Portiuncula in early 1211 and it became the “motherhouse” of the Franciscans. St. Clare was first received into her vows at the Portiuncula and it is also where St. Francis welcomed Sister Death in 1226. The original structure of the Portiuncula is preserved inside the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in Assisi. St. Francis of Assisi persuaded Pope Honorius III to grant the famous privilege of the Pardon of Assisi, a plenary indulgence to all those who visited the Portiuncula on August 2 and received communion, confessed their sins, and prayed for the Pope’s intentions. This indulgence has been extended to all Franciscan churches throughout the world.

On this Feast today, we are reminded of our Franciscan way of living the Gospel in the world. There seems to be a hunger in our world, especially among the younger generation, for something more than what the world can offer, much like the hunger that existed during medieval times that led to the lay spirituality movement. Francis and Clare responded to that hunger out of their own desires for something greater than themselves and what their world offered them. They responded to the call to rebuild the Church by placing Jesus and the Gospel at the foundation and setting their gaze on the living God in everything and everyone around them as the stones. While this was done in a peaceful manner, their authentic and human way of life became a disturbing presence in both the Church and society. Francis and Clare offer a way, today, for people to take their gaze off of their personal needs and turn their gaze towards Christ and, therefore, towards God in everyone and in everything in our society.

Francis and Clare refused to settle for what was offered to them to satisfy their yearning. Francis saw that there was an imbalance that was causing structures in the Church and society to crumble. His solution was to create balance and to rebuild what had fallen by simply living the Gospel. Clare’s response to this imbalance was to follow Francis’ example of Evangelical living and to insist on the privilege of poverty through prayer and contemplation. Through their perseverance to live the Gospel, the landscape of the Church and society changed to one that was more just and more peaceful. Our call today is the same as that of Francis and Clare: to rebuild the church, and the world, through living the Gospel in simplicity, contemplation, and placing our gaze on God in all things and all people so we can care for creation. Let us consciously accept the challenge to live this call!
