West, Menomonie, WI 54751 The North American Lutheran Church confesses:

The Triune God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and the Gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe.

1. Jesus Christ is the Word of God incarnate, through whom everything was made and through whose life, death, and resurrection God fashions a new creation.

2. The proclamati

on of God’s message to us as both Law and Gospel is the Word of God, revealing judgment and mercy through word and deed, beginning with the Word in creation, continuing in the history of Israel, and centering in all its fullness in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

3. The canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the written Word of God. Inspired by the Holy Spirit speaking through their authors, they record and announce God’s revelation centering in Jesus Christ. Through them the Holy Spirit speaks to us to create and sustain Christian faith and fellowship for service in the world.

God has determined to continue his creative work, making of us a new creation. Because he has the authority of the Creator of heaven and earth, as well as being the one who overcame the depths of the earth, Jesus charges his apostles to go into all the world that he made and make more disciples, baptizing them in the name of Yahweh God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Through this baptism of word in water, a new order is created in the chaos of human life.

Just as the 70 elders initially prophesied, and then did not (save two), we will go through seasons, congregationally and personally. In dry seasons, such as the psalmist was experiencing, we must learn to wait upon the Lord, for “he teaches the humble his way” (Psa 25:8). Even when it feels like the Lord is not near, we may be sure that he is. Our souls may always abide in his peace, even when we do not feel so peaceful (Psa 25:13).

Jesus contrasts those who think they are spiritually satisfied with those who recognize their deep need for Him. The religious leaders were unmoved by His warning because they trusted in their own righteousness, but Jesus’ words bring comfort and hope to those who are spiritually thirsty and aware of their sin. Luther emphasizes that the Gospel is meant for humble hearts ready to receive the Spirit and the living water Christ gives.

As Jesus awaits betrayal and suffering, his focus is not on himself but on praying for his disciples, revealing his deep love and selflessness. In the Gospel of John, Jesus is glorified through his obedience and through believers holding to God’s truth and Word. His prayer is that Christians remain faithful, so that through their faithfulness both the Son and the Father are glorified.

We should not be surprised by hardship, especially when suffering comes because of our faith in Christ. Rather than complaining that trials are unfair, we are called to rejoice, trusting that God uses difficulties to refine our faith and draw us closer to Him. Through humility, patience, and perseverance, we resist evil and grow stronger in the Spirit.
