PRESS RELEASE: 1875 and 1916 Time Capsules on Display at Grace Episcopal Church, Sunday, Sept. 25
Members of Grace Episcopal Church will be offering a rare glimpse into two different eras of Menomonie history on Sunday, September 25th. The contents of the church's two recently unearthed time capsules, one from 1875 and one from 1916, will be on display. A program celebrating Grace Church's 150th year is set for 1:30pm in the church at E4357 451st Ave. Everyone with an interest in local history is invited to attend.
On August 22nd of this year, the church's priest, Reverend Jacalyn Broughton, and some members of the church witnessed the opening of two cornerstones at the parish's previous location at the corner of 10th Avenue and 6th Street East. Stone mason Peter Shubert was able to retrieve the capsules, leaving the cornerstones in place. The current owner of the building, Brian Schefchik, was also in attendance.
As early as 1870, there was an interest in forming an Episcopal church in Menomonie, but it was not until September 1, 1872 that an application for the church was approved by the Episcopal Diocese of Wisconsin. A lot for the church building was purchased in March of 1873 and the cornerstone was laid on June 10, 1875. In that cornerstone was a time capsule that included various artifacts of the time.
In 1916, Grace Church (which was located at 1002 6th Street E.), suffered major damage from a large fire. With morning temperatures of -30 degrees on January 16th, firefighters were unable to save most of the building.
When a new structure was built on the same lot, later that year, a new, additional cornerstone was put in place. The cornerstone on the northwest corner contained the 1916 capsule. The southwest cornerstone would house the older cache.
When Grace Church moved to its current location on 451st Avenue in July of 2007, there was no attempt to excavate the cornerstones. In fact, the two time capsules were all but forgotten. A member of the church found reference to them in an archived Dunn County News article from 1916. The clipping stated that the old capsule was retrieved and opened. Inside were “church papers, a historical sketch of the church, a prayer book, a copy of the Dunn County News, a fifty-cent piece of 1853, some pieces of scrip of the Knapp, Stout, and Co., and several pieces of fractional currency of this government”. Scrip is a currency paid to workers of a company that can be used in that company's stores.
A noon lunch will be provided prior to the 1:30 program on September 25. Items from both 1875 and 1916 capsules will be available for viewing.
