Every so often someone asks whether people are “taking too much” from our Blessing Box.

The answer is simple: no.

We check the box often. We know the people who use it. We know the needs in our community. The truth is that the amount of food in that little box is never enough to solve anyone’s food insecurity.

What we see are neighbors trying to make it through another day, another week, another month.

Some live alone on fixed incomes. Some are caring for children. One grandmother who visits is raising six grandchildren. If she emptied the entire box, it still wouldn’t be enough to meet her family’s needs for very long. If she took every item from it, we wouldn’t be angry. We’d probably cry tears of relief that, for a moment, she had a little more food in her kitchen.

When you’ve lived with chronic poverty or food insecurity, having “extra” isn’t greed. It’s safety. It’s knowing that if something unexpected happens tomorrow, there might still be something to eat.

That’s why we don’t count what people take. We don’t judge how much they take. We don’t judge how often they come. We don’t ask them to prove they need it.

The Blessing Box exists because food should not come with interrogation, suspicion, or shame.

So if you’ve ever worried that someone might be taking more than they should, please don’t. We’d rather err on the side of generosity every single time.

Thank you to everyone who helps keep the box stocked. Every can, every box of pasta, every bag of rice is a small reminder to our neighbors that they are seen, valued, and loved.

One final note: comments that accuse our neighbors of abusing the Blessing Box, or that shame people for taking food, will be removed. We are committed to protecting the dignity of the people we serve. If we have to choose between someone’s criticism and someone’s dignity, we will choose dignity every time.

So grateful for our friends at First Baptist! What a great example of strong, gifted women in ministry!

We are thankful for the many ways Baptist women bring the gospel to life at FBC Marshall. Thank you for answering God’s call to serve, teach, minister, pastor, and preach!
