What It Can't Buy
June 11, 2026
"This is what the Lord says: 'Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches.'"
Jeremiah 9:23 (NIV)
I have thought about what money can and cannot buy for a long time.
Money can buy a bed, but it cannot buy sleep. It can buy books, but it cannot buy wisdom. It can buy a house, but it cannot buy a home. It can buy medicine, but it cannot buy health. It can buy pleasure, but it cannot buy contentment.
God is making a point through that list, and it's not subtle. Jeremiah records the Lord's own warning that the wise should not boast of wisdom, the strong should not boast of strength, and the rich should not boast of riches. Not because these things are wrong, but because they are all temporary.
The Roman Empire was at one time the mightiest force on earth, and it’s gone. Napoleon's army was the most powerful fighting force in the world before Waterloo finished it. Whatever feels most permanent in your life right now is not as permanent as you think.
Your possessions will either leave you while you're alive or you will leave them after you're dead. But God exercises kindness that never fades, justice that never misses, and righteousness that never bends.
When financial stress tightens your chest this week, you can pray before you get anxious. Pray to the Lord, who’s given you everything. You can trust Him with all of it.
Then hold it a little more loosely today. Whatever you're holding, He is worth more.
Prayer: Lord, sometimes I have more trust in my bank account and my own abilities than in You. Forgive me. Remind me today that everything I have comes from You and will return to You. Help me hold it all loosely and know You deeply. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Heading Straight In
June 10, 2026
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
John 17:3 (NIV)
What would you say if God asked you why He should let you into heaven?
The New York Times ran a feature on former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was then 72 years old and preparing for his 50th college reunion. Bloomberg was talking about how many of his classmates had died. The journalist noticed he didn't seem particularly worried about his own death. Pointing to his work on gun safety, obesity, and smoking, Bloomberg grinned, "I'm telling you, if there is a God, when I get to heaven, I'm not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It is not even close."
I'll give him this much. There won't be an interview.
But listen to how Jesus actually defines eternal life. In John 17:3 He says, "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." It’s not your church attendance or resume that Jesus highlights. It’s knowing Him.
Bloomberg is trying to pay for something that was freely given. You cannot earn what God already offers through Jesus Christ.
If you have been keeping a mental ledger of your faithfulness, put it down. Or maybe you struggle to let go of a few decisions you regret. Let it all go. The debt you owe was settled at the cross.
God doesn't want your achievements. He wants you to know Him. That's the only way you’re heading straight in.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for letting go of my ledger and letting me in because of what You’ve done. When I try to earn what you freely offer, help me receive the gift. I want to know You, not just serve You. Thank You for Jesus, who makes that possible. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

My Dad Knows God
June 9, 2026

"But let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 9:24 (NIV)

A small-town pastor is walking home from church one Sunday when he rounds the corner of his house and hears his son's voice in the yard. Three boys are competing with each other, each one bragging that his dad knows someone important. One dad knows the mayor. One knows the governor. One knows the senator. That pastor's heart starts to sink because he doesn't know any of them.

Then his own son speaks up. "Boys, my dad knows God."

I love that. That pastor bowed his head right there in the yard and prayed, "Lord, may I always be known as a man who knows You." And that is the prayer I have for you today.

Jeremiah says the one thing worth boasting about is having the understanding to know the Lord. Not your title, not your track record, not the people you can call. Just this one thing: you know Him.

This week, tell one person something specific God has done in your life. Not a general statement about faith, but something concrete. That's what boasting in Him actually looks like. And more people around you need to hear it than you realize.

That's the only name worth dropping.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your Word. Open my eyes to see the truth of who You are on every page. I want to be known as someone who knows You. Give me the courage to boast in nothing else but knowing You, truly. Give me understanding, Lord. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

The Fourth Window
June 8, 2026

"Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NIV)

There is something I came across recently called the Johari Window. It is a model that maps four quadrants of how we know ourselves.

Quadrant 1 is open – what you and others both know about you, the public version.

Quadrant 2 is the blind spots that others see in you that you can't see in yourself.

Quadrant 3 is what you know but deliberately hide from everyone else.

And then there's the fourth quadrant, the part of you that nobody knows, not you and not anyone around you.

That's exactly where God comes in. He knows the public you, the hidden you, and every blind spot you've never been able to see. He even knows what's in that fourth window. And with full knowledge of all of it, He still invites you to know Him back.

Jeremiah says the one thing worth boasting about is having the understanding to know God. He doesn’t mean quoting a lot of facts about Him, but actually living closely with Him. I’m talking about a relationship that reaches into every part of your life, including the parts you haven’t realized yet.

Before you open your Bible today, pray that God gives you more than information. Seek to know Him the way He already knows you. He answers that prayer every single time.

Prayer: Father, thank You for knowing me completely. You even see the parts I think I can hide and those things I don’t even know yet. I want to know You as personally as You know me. Meet me in Your Word today. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

The Only Door
June 5, 2026

"For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink."
1 Corinthians 12:13 (NIV)

People who survive near-death experiences describe their entire life flashing before them in a matter of seconds. I find those stories fascinating, but what I am far more interested in is what the Bible calls the in-the-body experience.

First Corinthians 12:13 describes it this way. The moment the Spirit leads you to believe in Jesus, He places you into the Body of Christ. You can attend church your entire life, show up every Sunday, and still not be part of it. Attendance doesn't get you in. One moment of genuine faith in Jesus does.

This was not always possible. In the Old Testament, the Spirit comes upon people for specific tasks, but does not dwell in them permanently. The Church simply does not exist yet. That changes at Pentecost, when God's Spirit comes to live inside every follower of Jesus, and the Body of Christ is born.

And when the Spirit comes to live inside you, you don't receive a portion of God. You receive all of Him. Every resource of heaven, every ounce of His power, every promise He has ever made, is yours the moment you believe.

If you have been sitting in church your whole life but have never truly crossed that line, today is the day. Bow your head right now and tell Him you believe. That one moment of genuine faith is the only door into The Church that lasts forever.

And if you have already walked through that door, rest in what that means. When you believed, you received all of God and a permanent place in a family that will never end. That is the only door you will ever need.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that the moment I trusted Jesus, You placed Your very own Spirit inside of me, guaranteeing Your promises to come. I have a permanent place in the family. Thank You, Lord! May I walk in peace and joy as one who belongs to You forever. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
